I'm in the process of assembling short block 318-390 stroker and my file fit ring for the top ring is at .022 i was going to make gap .017. Second ring is .012. When i used speed pro rings in 360 i made ring gaps. .018 top ring .020 second. Hard to get rings for this set up. Thanks Bradley

I wouldn't hesitate at all to use .022 on the tops and .024 to .026 on the second rings, epsecailly if it is a pump gas street motor That is if they piston maker doesn't want the top ring wider to start with than .022 like most Hypertutic pistons want I found out the hard way a long time ago that having some clearances a tiny bit to tight is way worst than having them .001 to .006 to big, especially ring gaps on pump gas street motors IHTHs

.005 isnt gonna kill ya... granted its a bit more
than called for... I have been running the second
ring larger than the top.. which seems to be a trend
the last few years.. reason why is, if it got past
the top ring dont hold it in there to cause both rings
to flutter

They are diamond flat top pistons on scat i beam rod mopar 4.00 stroke cast crank.yes it will be pump gas engine. Yes i noticed speed pro wanted bigger second ring gap but total seal wants bore x.0035. Thanks guys appreciate it

Speed Pro has been advicing the larger gap on the second ring for some time, Total Seal probally needs to update thier instructions instead of using the original one from back in the 1970s I use the .0048 per inch of bore formula for the top rings on most pistons with no power adders and .0050/.0053 for the second ring gap

I run them the same, I figure the top one will get hotter and have a tighter gap once it is running.

I am not causing global warming, I am just trying to hold off a impending Ice Age!

A set of 4.000 rings would probably allow you to file fit to your heart's content, although with total seal rings it shouldn't be so critical, right?

Years ago I found a set of 0.25mm OS rings for a Toyota landcruiser, almost exactly 0.004" OS, nice file-fit was obtained.

Ring gap is overrated. Educate yourself here. This is just one of many articles on the subject

http://www.diagnosticengineers.org/journal_%20articles/Ring%20Gaps%20vs%20Knowledge%20Gaps.php

Cylinder wall finish/ring seal is where the power lies.
