I'm geting my '70 1/2 340 cuda back on the road after sitting for some 30 years. We plan to do the Power Tour in June, so I'm pressed for time. I ordered a reman alternator to throw on the car for now. It's a Remy reman single pulley 50 amp (guess nobody does the 37 amps anymore?) from Rock Auto and got it today. The single pulley alternator that currently is on the cuda now has 2 field terminals and 2 harness wires attached to them. The Remy reman only has one field terminal available (see attached picture). So I called the Remy tech line and they inform me that all their '70 Mopar reman alternators only have one field terminal now. And all I have to do is hook either one of the two harness field wires to the one field terminal and tape the other harness field wire off. I find this kinda of hard to believe. In looking at the Chrysler elec diagram, one field wire goes to the firewall bulkhead, and the other field wire goes to the idle solenoid and to the firewall bulkhead. The Remy tech told me that the only other Mopar alternator that has 2 field terminals is the '72 and up squareback alternators. While my 'cuda is a '70 1/2, I'm pretty sure the roundback alternator was still correct for it. Do I need to return this alternator and find some other reman alternator with 2 field terminals or is this how they roll these days? Any input would be welcomed. Thanks

OK, this makes sense. Looks like they sent me a '69 single wire alternator. I'll return it and get a '70-'71 dual field wire alternator from Summit. Right now, I'm not too impressed with the Remy tech.
Thanks.

Well Summit didn't pan out. Most were single wire, higher amps. NAPA, AutoZone, Oreily all show the '69 single wire or the later squareback dual field for the '70 application. Anyone have a source for a simple '70-'71 reman 37-46-50 amp dual field single pulley alternator? Thanks

Yes I agree, a local rebuilder can service and convert most alternators. I just looked at summit because I generally don't like to give out misinformation: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pwm-7019/overview/360 view shows two fields on a round back alternator.... I would call to verify, but seems legit

Pete, Sorry, I did see that alternator on Summit but it was a higher amp output unit than I wanted to run. I should have mentioned that. I'm a little concerned about the original wiring on this car. But that was indeed the only dual field roundback that I have been able to find for sale. Thanks. It looks like I can make this alternator work. Moparts member Jim (aka 70RT) is sending me a brush assembly to install making this unit a dual feed.

Rather nobody rates the alternators the way Chrysler did. Best I can tell is that Chyrsler's method is the same as the give in the shop manual. Its a specific load at a specific speed. Not a very high speed either IIRC. The funny part is that the aftermarket doesn't offer how they come up with the ratings they put on the box. So without that its really hard to compare.
If you don't mind the look, a standard (low) amperage square back will provide slightly better charging at idle than the round back. With the square facing down, its not very noticble. That's what I ended up with when one of my old ones died near Albany NY. Carquest close to my friend's house had a two wire version in that morning, so that's what I went with. I was in the opposite position with the pre 70 single field output wire. So just modified the extra to ground.
I also agree with those who suggest hunting a good local alternator-starter repair place. They can check what it needs and replace just what is needed. Diodes and bearings are the usual.

Brush, brush holder , and correct pulley on the way. Let me know when they arrive, glad to help out.
yup. the alterators the op pictured appear to have positions for BOTH grounded and isolated brush holders, so they can be used as 69 and earlier (grounded) or 70 and later (isolated)
for a so called supplier to tell you that you should just "tape off one wire" is ridiculous.
