OK, got into it, filter loose, and O-ring missing, (sucking air). Good news: apparently no more acting like it's not in gear. Bad news: now tranny is hard down-shifting (noticable jolt) when coasting down to a stop. Seems to be 3 to 2nd downshift. Fluid level checks OK hot and cold. Only thing done was new filter (factory replacement), and Fluid, (Castro ATF 4+). Any Ideas? Would sucking air have damaged tranny and caused this? Vehicle 03 Chry T & C, v-6, w/107k miles. Any ideas appreciated.

Is it a down shift or the lock up torque convertor slow to unlock?

Feels more like a downshift. More noticable when coasting down to a stop slowly, not as noticable coming to a "hard stop" under braking.

Had it been awhile since the last fluid change? When we bought our T&C with 75k on it, it had never had a fluid change. I did a pan drop/filter change. For the next few days, the shifts were very firm, darn near harsh. It had to be due to the fresh fluid. The trans did adapt/relearn, though, and everything gradually returned to normal.

Yeah, that Cuban ATF might have done it, too.

It needs to have the trans module "quicklearned" to restet the addaptive memory. What happened was because of the delayed going in gear the CVI count went up on the Underdrive clutch and now the trans controller cycle's the solenoid faster to engauge the underdrive clutch faster since it was delayed with the problem. Well when it downshifts from 4th to 3rd (which is the downshift bang you feel) it releases the 2-4 clutch and applies the underdrive clutch for 3rd gear and since the CVI count is still high it hits hard. I used to see this all the time in the dealer as we had pump problems which did the same thing. Once you have the Quicklearn done or restet it should stop the bang and adaptime memory will learn the shifts to make it feel even better. It will eventually relearn on its own but it will take a while. At the dealer I could reset the trans memory (quicklearn) with the scanner tool and roadtest it in the 1/2 hr time we were paid with no problem. Ron

Ron,
Is this like the old GM cars, you disconnect the negative battery cable for about 15 sec, and reconnect, and the 'puter will "re-learn?"

Thanks again.

Ah, the infamous "bumpshift".
Like Ron says, the control module needs to relearn.
There's a little more involved than just disconnecting the battery.
Once both battery cables are off the battery, touch the two cables together (for about 10 seconds). The control module has memory that needs to be dumped, by touching the battery cables it does that. DAHIK
True, it will take a while for the tranny to relearn, it won't happen right away.

That's good one kawboy. "Flying fickle finger of fate" obviously quicker than the brain on that one.

Unhooking the battery usually wont do it from what I remember. We had to go into the trans controller with the scann tool and reset all the tranny clutch CVI volumes. That was the best way to stop it right away. You can try unhooking the battery and all as it cant hurt any. If it does not work it will relearn after a good while but it can take a good bit of driving before it relearns enough to soften the shift back up. It actually happens because of the initial delayed going in gear when you put it in drive as the controller sees it dont apply the clutch fast enough so it ramps the solenoid duty cycle up and applies the under drive clutch faster and that happens to be the same clutch that comes back on in the 4-3 downshift as the underdrive clutch is on is 1 , 2 and 3rd gears. Ron, Thanks for the insight. Any idea on what kind of charge I should be looking for for the "quicklearn" at a dealer?

Any transmission shop or car repair shop with a good scanner can quick learn your vehicle.

around here if they write a ticket on it figure a half hour labor time of what ever there shop rate is.
Any higher look somewhere else . It'll take them all of 5 minutes to do it.

My local dealers trans tech charges me $20 out the back door

Ive read a few stating Quick Learn!

Do this!''

They get the loss of prime code, and will downshift, or upshift aggrsively,

They will adapt back to your driving but that can take a while.

Have a dealer buddy just quick learn it for ya.

Kasey

By all means if you have a buddy that can quicklearn it for you have him do it. We used to get .5 a half hr to do it and roadtest it. When I left in 20011 we were at $100 per hr at the dealer in Md I worked at but we had a set price for the quicklearn of about $45 dollars but by all means shop around for a good price if you dont have a friend that can do it. Sometimes at our dealer the cust price could even depend on which service writer you delt with. Ron
