I just bought a 87 d150 LB with a stock 318 with a 2.76 rear gear. I pulled the heads to check the bore and valves. I replaced head, intake and exhaust gaskets. New valves seals and checked the valves by doing the ATF test. I also replace timing chain and waterpump. Now that I'm driving it I'm wishing I had put a cam in it while I had it open.
Last night while watching the SB I drank too much bourbon and bid and won a Crane Energizer 272 cam and lifters. I will be dropping a 4 barrel intake and carb when I do the cam swap. I am assuming that the truck will be sluggish until 2k then open up. MY question is will it be more sluggish than the current cam? Also could I degree this cam to move the RPM range down?

I ain't a cam guy so no relevent info but it very well may be a better deal than the OE cam. I would degree it and advance it 4 deg which will built cyl psi down lower. Anytime you alter cyl psi you need to recurve the dist for a spot on tune & with a heavy truck/cube limited eng you would want it sharply tuned. Since you ain't getting any love on this Q Here's a BTT for ya for the cam guys that know more on this. The eddy 1406 would be a good carb and you need the strip kit

Here's what the current cam looks like: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=211837&cc=1084126About the tiniest cam known to mankind with 181/192 duration at 50 and .364/.399 lift, something like that. The CS665 stock 360 dual exhaust cam is 203/203 and the lift is .410/.410. Also LSA is 110. This would be a good cam if you're looking to keep running those gears. The Enginetech version is ~$65 on Rockauto. Or the smallest of the Comp XE line or Lunati Voodoo line. That 216/216 cam is an old Cam Dynamics chevy lobe grind, dating from the late '70s. They liked the single pattern cams. It would be a much better cam for a 360. The only reason it may work on a 318 would be the ports in the 318 style heads are pretty small so velocity is up, and a longer cam timing MAY help fill the cylinders. But I'm predicting the engine'll be plenty doggy until around 2400 rpm. You'll be shifting down for hills. You could probably advance it 6 degrees ahead of split overlap. R.

You could have it reground if you think it is too big. Engle, among others have some good profiles for SB Mopars. Last time I had a regrind, I think it was $99. Cheaper than a new one.

Biggest cam I like to put in an otherwise stock 318 is the 340 cam. But that's in a car.

I just don't have the time to do it twice. I have a '47 dodge coupe that I need to get on the road. This truck is more of a daily driver than a project. After the coupe is done I will play this truck more.

If you add more spark advance, as mentioned, and go a step looser on torque converter, it will be ok.
Worst case, a dog from the traffic light but very fun mid-range and on up. Much more fun than the cam you have now.
I'd run it with the a smallest 4 barrel available (600 cfm being the largest), new spark curve, headers, good dual exhaust and same converter to try it out. Change converter later.
Don't over think this, just do it.

Ok guys I'm back. I sold that Cam and broke even(thanks moparts)
I picked up a old weiand stealth dual plane #7507 this one has the square bore
Intake was as expected although it looks like is has the smaller 318 size ports. I have been googling for the last 1/2 and for somes can find the dimension although I have seen them somewhere.
The carb is a plastic 850 cfm thermoquad. So I would need to rebuild it and buy an adapter. I like the idea of the spreadbore but I'm sure that this carb is gonna responsive or boggy. I've never run one before.
Lastly I'm cam shopping.I found this one on rock auto as well what are your thoughts on this one?
ENGINETECH Part # ES1089R Stage 1 high performance. May not be computer compatible. Use flat followers. .050" Duration-204/214; Cam Lift-.281/.296; Lobe Center-108/116.
the lift would end up being 4.21/444 with the 1.5 rocker arms

If you can swing it, I'd steer you to the Lunati Voodoo line, the smallest one.
Back when Comp had a Magnum cam for the 318, it was 204/204, 0.425 lift, LSA 110. That one or one like it should work better.

I think I'm gonna save up for that Lunati. Looks it's gonna give good torque and a smooth powerband. What do you think about the TQ?
