As we build the Vortech version of the KB/B1 with a goal of about 1200 HP I am thinking of the converter / tranny. I cannot talk with Kenny at PTC without him trying to talk me into putting in a glide. He would probably give me a killer deal since he is a Mopar man himself. I drive the car down the local 1/8 track and around the local back roads on nice days.

So anyone who has put one into an A body behind a BB, what is involved?

How is the rear of the tranny supported?

What is with the crank adapter for the flywheel, since I currently have an 8 bolt A fuel crank that needs to use an adapter for the 727 converter and a spacer between the block and the tranny.

What about a blanket, or one even needed if the tranny is built up for the job?

Which gear set?

What did I forget?

I have a JW performance Bell Housing and their Supercase.

Stuff is real nice and will hold alot of horsepower.

Me too on the ultrabell - I do have a TCI flexplate and crank adapter that I am not using because they are 6 bolt (my crank is 8 bolt).. I may even have a motor plate adapter - though it probably looks a bit like swiss cheese...

Ultra bell here also but with stock case and Im only at about the 800 hp level. Modified stock a body crossmember. I do not use a midplate either. I also have a Bryant crank with the thick 8 bolt flange, my crank adapter is only a pilot for the converter snout. No spacer between crank and Reactor flexplate. I have an adapter but it just fits into the flexplate and holds a snout pilot in the crank. I use a Bruno's shield as it fits under tunnel pretty easily. 1.80 9310 straight planet 4340 output turbo 300m input shaft, steel clutch hub with stock drum and 6 hi clutches. Billet low servo and coan pro brake with 5 reverse clutches. Stock case, tailstock and pump with hard stator support holds up well at my power level and 3000lbs.

Get the Reid case and bell housing. Only use a 1 piece flex plate only, no of the crap with the ring welded to the plate.
the trans cross member lines up real close with a glide. a piece of angle iron, drill a couple holes and use an a-body trans cross member. easy swap!

I also use the reactor flex with no spacer. Freaking beautiful Duster by the way.

I have the same set up as 540duster except I run trans blanket don't have room for a shield under the stock floor.

JW bell housing and JW case with 8 bolt adapter and flex plate. no shields needed. the case and bell have the sfi needed to run without them.

You don't need a blanket because if you have a KB/B1 with 1200 HP you need to be using a heavy case anyway. You might need to use a starter without the outboard support for the drive. I used a Meziere on my hemi for clearance but those things are so good you would want one anyway. My buddy has a glide in his Dart, he had to modify the trans mount but it wasn't a big deal, just some fabrication. Your crank situation is unique but hopefully you can put the powerglide adapter with what you are using now and make it work. A 1.80 straight cut is the default low gear set. I love 727's but at your power level you will probably prefer the glide.

What's to consider? What is the current trans? I assume given where the car came from it is likely a turbo 400 in it now?

FWIW I have run glides for a long time behind a BBM. There really is no issue. Lots of options on how to do it from adapter plates that use Chevy bells to bells with Mopar and glide patterns. I have run both. I can tell you I prefer to run the Gm bell in case I ever need a trans it is prett easy to find one at the track. With a Mopar bell not as easy as most guys run a one piece case. I run Reid cases in the dragster and Stratus the Barracuda has a JW bell and case. When it was built that was pretty much the only option.

The car still has the same 727 John Crisman (Tranzact of Indy) built when Mike Robbins was racing the car back in the day. PTC has been through it recently and they said it has all good parts (mostly from A&A). I hate the RMVB as it leaves me stuck in 3rd gear at the end of a run, plus I hate the damn Cheetah SCS shifter. Won't be using aluminum rods on the 496 re-do so breaking a rod on shutdown isn't as much concern. On the 1/8th with just NA power (enough to get 3150# to 6.32/111) I was into 3rd with only 100' remaining or so, so a 2 speed would probably be OK. I have that 727 tranny behind my mega/440-1 540 and it wouldn't be such a bad deal to have a completely new tranny/vert built for the 496 so the engine/ trans are a matched pair.

..... I put five test hits on my new combo last weekend and four of those passes the shifter (Cheeta scs) made the 1-2 shift on it's own.

....and "IF" you keep the torqueflight you could go with a clean neutral valve body. That would require a new shifter too, but it sounds like you're in the market anyways.

J body what were the results of the test hits? Make a thread if you don't mind.

I think a glide is a great choice for the demon. You say Vortech, is that as in Vortech supercharger? Which one?

V7 YSi which should support 1200 HP or so. I have 2 lower pulleys and 4 uppers. The current set of pulleys will rev out the blower at 7200, which is low for the short stroke 496.
