Re: installed height - Mine are right at 1.900" w/ the combination of ti retainers & 10* locks that Porter Racing provided me along w/ the springs & cam I got from him. I'd have to go look at the packages to see if the locks are the +.050" installed-height style or not. I don't recall seeing much variation between intake & exhaust height w/ Hughes valve seat work done in conjunction w/ their CNC porting.

Re: rocker shaft studs - Yeah, the Hughes studs are a little shorter than I'd like; I bought a couple of sets of ARP studs from AndyF when he still had some extras and they're a bit longer. Andy supplied them as kits, so I can't give you the individual part #s for the long & short studs he included.

Re : <Installed height> I hate to do this to you but 1.900" how? Is there a spring seat or cup? How thick is it? I take it you are staying under .700 lift? As far as the valve heights from my measuring both valves are 5.350" and the exhaust has a bit less installed height due to a larger distance from the margin to the face in comparison to the intake. I'm always happy to get a second opinion.

Re : <Studs> I worked with ARP and went through every stud they had that were a combo of 3/8 fine and coarse. We the studs you got from Andy F coarse threaded on both ends by chance?

Do you want me to post pics of my ports or just continue badgering you with questions related to this head but not related to your post?

I'm following your work and appreciate you sharing your results.

I opened my entries up to 2.45 x 1.3...basically as large as I felt comfortable going w/ the standard port Vic intake. If I remember correctly, this allowed min x-sxn to move further downstream.

I'll share pics of where I'm at w/ mine later today.

No flow #s yet...will do when vj is performed. Also have a few pics side by side w/ an LS 821 (rect port) casting I did some work on...interesting to compare the two...

Jeramiah - I have a COMP-brand spring seat (uses an inner locator step, instead of the outer cup-style I've usually had) that I THINK is ~ .080" thick.

All of the valve train parts are sitting on parts shelf awaiting final assembly of my Hughes heads, but I'd need to make some time to go check part #s & take measurements.

My gross valve lift is just under .700" w/ 1.6 rockers.

Pics are cool. I like seeing other heads, too.

My ARP studs are fine-thread on the shaft-side, which I'd prefer over course threads when I'm trying not to over-torque the hold-downs.

Cogito - My "standard port" Hughes CNC heads are 2.40 x 1.30, and they're pushing the limit for being able to match a non-MW intake manifold w/o needing to weld additional material (depends on intake).

What's the LS 821 (rect port) casting? Is that based on an LS-3 or LS-7? I've looked fairly closely at both of those Chevy heads, too.

EDIT: Added (semi-crappy) pic of intake runners for my original Hughes CNC heads mentioned above.

I lost interest when "YOU" didn't even respond to your "OWN" thread, that I posted to about the same two heads, just abit ago. Maybe others did too.

Brad, I'm sure there are many like me who read your post with great interest but felt they didn't have anything to add.

Matter of fact I read nearly every one of your posts because even when I don't agree with you, you have some interesting questions, answers, and seem to be doing a lot of research, and I like research.

But I don't want to clutter up a thread about which I know very little.

Just a FWIW, here's a shot of the new Trick Flow PowerPort 240 BBM head's chamber. There are things about this chamber that I like even more than the Hughes-CNC'd later version of the Victor I showed above (e.g., plug location, the chamber contours where the valve seats transition into the chamber near the plug), but it's still only a standard-height port, etc.

Hey, cool.

(Nothing of any value to add, just doing my monthly log in...you've gone so far into cylinder heads I just barely even know what you're talking about anymore )

Do you know of a chamber cc change with the polish, laid back angle by the valves?

If you mean how much did my late-style Victor chamber volumes increase after Hughes ran their CNC chamber work on them, I don't know (yet).

Mine had been milled down to 70cc after Brian at IMM worked on them for his project, so I have a "before" volume for comparison. However, measuring them isn't exactly high on my priority list of car-related tasks. Sorry I can't give you that answer at this point.

Thanks for the reply.I would think 2cc on the low side and 4cc high side but I was interested because I will eventually clean things up in my head so Thanks!

That chamber is pretty Trick! pun intended.
That's what I was talking about a week or so ago, when we were discussing the different Chinese heads.

This is not a "better" vs. "worse" comparison, but simply a case of how two different approaches to the same basic port turned out.

These are the last results for the Procomp port shown in pictures vs. the average for all 8 ports of my older Hughes CNC-ported Victors:

--------- PC ------ HE-
.100 - - 67.9 - - - 71.1
.200 - - 140.9 - - 153.6
.300 - - 201.2 - - 221.6
.400 - - 261.7 - - 273.1
.450 - - 289.4 - - 294.1
.500 - - 312.7 - - 310.2
.550 - - 330.6 - - 322.7
.600 - - 342.1 - - 336.3
.650 - - 340.1* - 343.0
.700 - - 344.0 - - 346.1
.750 - - 347.8 - - < No gain >
.800 - - 351.6 - - < No gain >

* Showing signs of flow separation / test pressure manometer instability

Wanna drive yourself nuts? Check out this article where a bunch of different Chevy LS3/LS92-type heads were tested on the same engine HERE!

If you look over all the different flow tests vs. HP & Torque results for each head, it should become really clear that there's no "for sure" improvement simply because one head flows more than another.

Yeah, the BIG HP # came from the best flowing head tested (an aftermarket replacement version w/ some extra tricks), but the rest of the ported heads were all w/in about 15 HP of each other, despite the flow #s across the lift ranges varying significantly between different heads.

Maybe being an amateur hack means I don't see any "obvious" trend of why certain heads did better than others, but I'll admit I really don't. It's not like there are huge difference in runner volumes, either, that might account for why some higher-flowing heads might have given up velocity to other lower-flowing ones.
