If one could go back to, say, 1968 and build a B Gas car with todays knowledge and using yesterday's parts, would Hilborn injection outrun a sheet metal tunnel ram all else being equal?

I would say yes.

Once tuned, it should. It will be tough to get the fuel curve right. The fuel curve from the injector pump before any high speed leanouts is linear, and the fuel demand is far from it on most engines. Gas having only a three percent tuning window, you can see how that would be a problem. On top of that, idle has to be pig rich on a constant flow system because there are no accelerator pumps. I don't know how quickly plugs fouled running gas , but I would bet it was quick.
If I were going to try that, I would book some dyno time to set up three staged bypasses, or have a data logger.

I thought the altereds in the 70's ET'd better with a cast TR and carbs than they did injected?

If your sole change was ONLY the manifold, I'd say the F.I. would still beat it. Why? Simple--you'd still have better throttle response, the F.I runners would still be optimal for the combo & the fuel delivery system wouldn't have changed. The only thing you're gaining with a sheetmetal intake is weight saving, perhaps better runner length but you're running the same old carbs. Now if you're talking a whole new intake system--intake AND carb change--- I'd still give the nod to F.I. but not by as wide a margin.....
