can the oil pan be removed in the truck without jacking up the engine?I am getting a deisel sounding noise at 2100 rpm.Does anyone else have a v10 nand does it make this noise? If i can get the pan off i will check the pickup and screen and maybe bearings if anyone thinks it could be rod bearings.Truck only has 84,000 miles on it and runs smooth with good oil pressure

You asked this question a few months ago. Mine will do this also. I thought it might be valve train noise/oil pressure issues. I think you said it would do it at start up also. When mine sits for a few days it will rattle at first start up of the day. Just like when you change the oil and filter and the motor oil has drained back you get that lifter noise for a few seconds. But also on heavy acceleration when the tach gets up to about 3000 on mine it will sound the same way. At that point I don't see any change in oil pressure. Some one told me once it could be the pressure relief spring but I think you said yours was good? I have not checked mine... Any one have any thoughts on this? I feel if it was a bearing noise you would hear it tapping all the time.

Reading your post got me thinking about my own again and i found this TSB on a google search. Look up "V10 DCP valve" The TSB states Knocking like noise coming from engine compartment at idle or under load....

I will unhook the connector tomorow and go for a ride.It sounds like this just may be a characteristic of the v10 since yours it doing it also.Lets hope.any idea about getting the oil pan off?

i had to change the oil pan on my 97 a few months ago - i did not have to raise the engine. i was kind of sweating that also, as this truck was so rusty i was afraid i was going to open up a can of worms if i had to raise the engine and deal with broken and rounded off fasteners.
i believe on the 2 wheel drive models the v10 needs to be raised, but not on the 4x4's.
i also had the front driveshaft out which i think helped a lot.
as soon as the pan is unfastened, drop it till it hits the frame crossmember, then remove oil pump pickup fasteners and then you can slide out the whole assembly in one shot. reassemble in the reverse order.

my 97 never made that noise, the reason i dropped the pan was to replace it - it rusted thru!.....i also have an '03, it does not make noise either.

I beleive the TSB only lists 98 99. Mine does not make any noise at idle after the first start up.

I also have an exhaust leak on the driver side manifold but the noise I am hearing sounds like a rattle.
