Anyone using this setup? The CompCams 911 spring is recommended up to 500 lift B/RB but are a larger diameter than the factory spring. I called a vendor and ordered a "drop in" replacement set of springs and I'm a little uncomfortable how they set in the factory retainers.

Thoughts? Don't worry about it? Did a board search and several members have used them but no word of the retainers.

I personally do not like it when the springs are allowed to walk around because they don't fit the retainers, or the step in the head, properly. They are cheap enough for retainers , cups and shims so I buy them.

And there is no such thing as a DROP in set of springs ...

Car on lift must be off lift by end of day, doubt vendor will be able to get additional parts here in the next 6 hours.

Just needed slightly better springs than 40 year old stockers as insurance, no more no less.

I have used the Comp 911 springs on many mild builds with stock retainers and never had a problem.

No!
Those retainers are far too small for that spring--come on--7 degree steel retainers that fit are available from Herbert Cams cheaper than the shipping--
Not a good idea to go that route and cheap to make it right

Right would be springs that fit the retainers. I specifically asked if these were a drop in and was told they would be fine.

I'm on a time crunch and the car is still in the bay. This has nothing to do with cost but time at this point. I would have paid extra for the correct springs. And of course the vendor is unavailable for comment being its a weekend.

I was just looking for a stock replacement spring. Nothing more.

Ended up loaning the owner of the car my truck for the weekend, see what tech support says on Monday.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Crane 99839 would be a better choice for stock replacement. Stock diameter and far less seat pressure than 911

Crane spring has the same 1.50" OD as the Compcams 991, factory OD is 1.39"

Inner on the factory spring is 1.01, Crane 1.086" and Comp 1.110"

Retainer is 1.334" OD

I helped a friend install 911s on his car and thought there was WAY too much slop in the stock retainer, so like you we had to waste time waiting for new retainers to arrive.

Sorry, I assumed you were replacing factory hi-perf springs which are 1.50 OD.
Those springs look like 383 2-barrel springs so 911's will be a huge increase in seat pressure.

Interesting.

With the factory springs are the retainers HP/non-HP different?

DC books states all the B/RB retainers are the same PN 2402045 after 1964 or so.

The mystery deepens.

Sealed Power has a new series of stock H.P. springs. Exact match for 4 bbl 383-440, 440 6-pac and 426 Hemi.I won't use 911's any more broke 2 in each of the 2 sets I have used lately.

Don't know. Perhaps in that context "all" means all hi-perf engines and not all engines. The hi-perf retainers will definitely fit 1.50 OD springs though.

It says all the "newer" engines.

Hmm, looking up a 60 300 with a 413 shows a smaller diameter valve spring than a 70 300 with a 440. The 70 should have fit the 911 springs just fine, 1.494" outside diameter on the Sealed Power spring.

Don't be the exception.
