rebuilding a 273 with a standard bore 3.625
i have egge pistons 10.5 and the rings they supplied are not filebacks but they measure .010 for top ring and .008 for second.
i think this is too tight.
what do others think?
total stock commando 273 build.
thanx in advance
frank.

When all else fails, go with .004" per inch of bore. Too tight = broken. Too loose = uses a little bit of oil.

Yes that is to tight. Go with .016" Top .014" Second.

that`s what i thought-that`s what i`ve done in the past.
i`ve heard about not having the second ring too tight as well to eliminate ring flutter caused by trapped pressure between the rings...is this true?
should i run both at .014 or go with .014 on the top and .012 on the second?
3.625 is a small bore.
thanx for the replies.
all the best
frank.

This is the standard I use... the ring companies do
a LOT more testing on end gap than I ever did.. I've
never broke a ring

I agree to tight. .004 per inch of bore is right for a normal setting. I would rather be a tad loose then to tight on ring gaps. Ron

IMO,
0.014" on the top and 0.010" on the second would be fine in that application. However, you won't notice any difference with 0.016" top and 0.014" second, or even 0.014" top and 0.012" second.
