The lugs to my ammeter were cut is there any harm in bypassing the ammeter and closing the loop by soldering or crimping these together? Or is there a better solution?

Run them to an aftermarket ammeter under the dash until you get the correct replacement ammeter and return it to factory.

Yes connect them together on the OTHER side of the plug in the firewall. I.E. connect them in the engine compartment. The weak point in this system is the brass connectors in the firewall plug, eliminate them.

all current runs thru that connection so make that a tight/clean/secure/good continuity connection wrapped well with tape when done

What year, brand and modle car are you having the issues with? As already mention many of the mid to late 1960 Mopar cars had issues with the alternator wiring connection at the bulkhead and on the amp meter itself I've had to repair and replace more than one wire in the charging system on more than one of those cars, especially 1969 All the charging current, amps, goes through (in sereis)the firewall bulkead connector into and through the amp gauge and then back to te bulhead connector and on to the battery to complete the charging circuit What where the Mopar electrcical engineers thinkng of

You can definitely connect them together on the engine compartment side. But make they still feed into the dash. They are the power feed for everything in the dash, headlamps, heater, ignition, etc.

Yep, those wires feed the entire interior. I would connect them together under the dash. Then, run a jumper wire from the alternator, directly to the starter relay. This way, the battery can be charged directly from the alt without having to go through the bulkhead twice. Also, you basically just doubled the size of the wiring that feeds power to the interior.

My 65 I connected them about 25 years ago as the amp meter was burning. The stock amp gauge is bad as are any after market ones if the factory wiring is left as is.The after market will burn quick on most I know.I install volt gauges now.Even into the late 70 the Mopar amp gauges were junk as all of my Rams had problems with them.I eliminated all of them and volt meters went in.Rocky
