Hello everyone, going through the stages of an engine and trans swap on my 71 satellite. had a 318/904, putting in a 360/727. I know ill need a shortened driveshaft. I am using Schumacher 340/360 swap mounts for 66-72 B body. I have the right headers and oil pan, but upon dropping the motor in I cant get it to move back about an inch. the pilot hub has been connected into the flex plate, and dowel pins into place and trans to engine bolts fastened. It is mated. I just cant get the extra inch! I looked underneath at the flex plate and since this is an externally balanced 360 I have weights on the back of convertor, and a huge weight in front that has to go into place around the flex plate just right. the flex plate bolt holes do not meet up with the convertor, if I turn engine counter clockwise just a tad it would meet up. or should I not turn it c/clockwise? Could it be the problem? I tried my best to get the flex plate pattern to match up the pads on the convertor face. Any ideas? Would my best bet be to un mate the engine/trans and try again after adjusting the convertor just right? Thanks in advance

from what you wrote, the engine and transmission are "successfully" bolted together, yes? and I take it your problem is dropping the engine down on the motor mounts into position?, yes?

If so?, is it possible you have the motor mount plates bolt to the front of the engine's ears/tabs that hold the motor mount steel brackets....they should be mounted behind the block's ear/tabs

yes, that is my issue. I believe the motor mounts were mounted as you mentioned behind the tabs. I followed the diagram with the kit and just can't get it to meet up.

What I understand in your post is that the torque wont move ahead far enough to mount to the flex plate ? I have seen that the nub on the converter was too large to enter the crank , could that be your problem? Is the tranny and engine a matched set ? do you have the flex plate reversed ? We might need more info .

The engine and trans were running together in a truck about 4 months ago. I did not remove the flex plate. ill try to find a pic on google of the weight on the front of the convertor

What?

Is it a motor mount not mating question, or a torque converter not mating question?

How about a picture of the problem rather than the "beauty shot" posted.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

I am confused as well, if your motor and trans were connected before you dropped it into the engine bay then why are the flex plate bolts not in and tight? And if the trans is in place on the motor then there should be nothing to adjust to get the motor mounts to drop on the K frame, you should have plenty of room to move the motor and trans back and forward to line up the mounts.

416 stroker from Nick at Compu-flow. 11.14 in full street trim. Seems like a new best every time out.
11.06 open headers----so far!!

I too am lost. The convertor and the flex plate will only bolt together in one certain position. If the convertor spins freely you should be able to spin it to find the correct set of holes. If you didn't mark one corner of it during dis-assembly and then rotated the convertor or the engine this may be your problem. As for the motor not being back far enough to land on the mounts...is it possible the trans mount is on backwards?

I installed the trans first with convertor, then dropped the motor in. i marked the convertor and flex plate, so i know what the pattern is. i believe the weight on the front of the convertor is "pinched" as i cant get the convertor to spin at all. i will loosen the trans to engine bolts and re-align and see if this solves it. i have a feeling it will. sorry for the confusion and thanks for your help

If I understand correctly you have the engine bolted to the transmission but can't turn the convertor to line up holes with the flex plate.

Is the back of the block flush against the transmission bell housing or is there a space there? Were you careful to make sure the convertor pump drive hub was properly seated into the front pump? If it is, you should have enough clearance for the convertor to spin without a problem.

The front hub on the convertor has to nest into the opening on the crank flange. If it's cocked at all you'll have trouble. I don't think the balance weight would be the problem. I ran into this problem putting a 360/727 in a b body this fall. The convertor was new, and I'd double checked everything before bolting them together, but still had a problem. Loosened up the bell housing bolts and wiggled things a bit and it all lined up properly.

Not sure if this helps or not. Best of luck.

The dowel pins went in with ease as did the nub on the convertor into the crank. ill try to take a pic next time im out at the car of the weight on the front of the convertor. it is pressed up against the flex plate and not in the "half moon" part of the flex plate. I cannot move the convertor at all. I made sure the convertor was all the way on before I did anything. I will loosen up the bolts and re align the convertor and try again. I hope I didn't bend the flex plate

The bolt pads on the convertor have to be about 1/2" further in than the bellhousing surface of the trans. Otherwise it isn't seated into the pump and you'll never get it together.

Sounds like you have the wrong flexplate or converter. 360 magnums had weights on the flexplate in later models, but LA's never did as the weights were on the converter. If you have a weighted flexplate and converter you should be having trouble with installation.

Really hard to tell from that photo but I almost think no. The back of the convertor on the top will pretty much hit the inside of the case (inner bellhousing area).
When you install the convertor it will line up on one notch then you have to turn it gently and it will fall into a second set of notches which is about an inch deeper.
You can tell from underneath even with the engine partly in, the convertor lugs have to be about a half inch deeper in than the bellhousing to engine surface.
