I have a new top I bought from Year One, a Kee top, for my '68 Barracuda. Attempting to install it with the help of a friend. My top has a separation of the material where it staples to the top bow. The videos I've watched and the manual my friend has, the tops don't have the separation and it's all one piece. My friend has installed two tops himself on his car ('62 Pontiac)and his tops didn't have that separation either. He seems to think something is wrong but I have no idea. Has anyone put on a new top that looked like this? Here's a pic of what I'm talking about. Thanks again...

That top is no good. Send it back and get a replacement. It should be one piece. They never stitched that piece in.

Is there a "tack strip" across the last bow? If so it gets tacked, not sewn.

Yes there is a tack strip in the last bow. On my Chall vert the top is 2 pieces, the rear window section and the front section. The front section wraps over and around the rear window section. They both attach to the tack strip. It looks to me on that top, the front section is not completely sewn.

My friend also thought that should be sewn across the back. I'm not replacing the piece with the glass, just the top. Sounds like I'll be giving Year One a call later today. I can't even count the number of parts that I've bought over the last several years that were wrong or just plain junk that I've had to return. It ends up costing a lot more money and it's incredibly frustrating. Thanks guys...

Just wondering if anyone else has an opinion on this top before I call Year One to see about a replacement. Thanks

Not sure on a-bodies, but '70 b and e body tops I have replaced are not open like that.

Don,

There's nothing wrong with your top the A body is a "2 part top", meaning the open seam is where you will trim/manipulate the mat'l into the tacking strip, many of the 50/60's cars are "2 part tops", either get a manual/vid/DVD/etc that covers 2 part tops installation exclusively, or pay a shop/professional for a proper leak proof/wrinkle free install

FYI...2 part tops use a molding that you add to cover the rear tack strip where the open 2 piece seam is tacked into place, a one piece top uses a "listing strip" that you either add, or is sometimes sewn into the top that simulates the look of a molding over the rear tacking strip, this area (rear tacking strip) of your cloth top takes/sees the most stress

Mike
