Hello,

My brother is considering going with a QA1 tubular K-member in his 1967 Belvedere II with a big block and 4spd.

Is there anyone on here running one on the street? If so, what do you think? Is it worth the $600 bucks? Is it strong enough for street use?

Thank you in advance.

Dont know if they worth it..but this is 15 dollars cheaper plus free shipping..

I have one on a 71 dart but it is a bracket racer not a daily driver.

QA1 did a lot of work in these so that the end result is significantly stronger than the original K frame. Downside to this durability is it is not significantly lighter than stock. However, you can run the QA1 frame with the stock T-bars or coil overs.

Otherwise, not much feedback out there on them. They just released them this past summer.

I wonder if they make them with Hemi mounts? Never looked but they do seem to add a lot of room over a stock K frame

Pity they don't make them with spool mounts, I'd snag one for my Dart.

After breaking briskets for years I want nothing to do with them.

I just got off of the phone with QA1 tech support. He told me the new B/E body tubular k-member is designed to use the factory torsion bars. In order to use coil overs with their tubular k-member, custom fabrication would be required.

I also asked how much they weigh and he told me about 35 pounds.

Just passing that along.

WireWeld, what is it in? Did you need to do any fabricating to use the coil-overs?

The question for is it strong enough for street use should be…would anybody turn loose a 17 year old boy with a car with one as his everyday ride? If it holds up under that, then yes, it is strong enough.

Several potential issues, at least on the A-body version I studied:

> Tension-strut bushings mounts are just cantilevered tabs welded on. Welds probably will not fail, but tubing will tear. Stock Ks had several generations of beefing and re-beefing to prevent this common problem (bushing would actually tear thru the K).

> Lack of diagonal gusseting (and short distance between the cross-tubes) is a worry -- it can basically "parallelogram"

> Biggest issue: Cannot use stock "locator" attaching bolts, in fact, 2 holes are slotted...remember, tying the chassis rails together is the primary purpose of the K-member!

Would be fine on a drag car, fine as glass-pavement cruiser; I'd not use it on potholed streets, Auto-X, etc.

Don't go over to the street rod forum and tell them any of this, see Custom 33 thread.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

This video is my car. QA1 borrowed it and had it at their facility all last winter test fitting all possible OEM/QA1 component combinations and trying them all out. I'd posted a few photos of the work here last winter.

Here's a shorter video on the control arms, etc. Last April they let me know they were done with the car. I drove it around all last summer. I was pleased with the setup. Car handles well and in my opinion is plenty strong for street use. The system looks hi tech and really cleaned up the engine compartment.

I believe QA1 bought out CAP inventory, engineering docs. and the right to sell them under thier name. That being said I had bought second hand one NOS NIB of CAP K members for a early, 1963 to 1966 A body to use in my 1965 Dart bracket car to eliminate the stock steering and torsion bars, when I got it it was for a stock replacement application I contacetd Ray at CAP and he said he would change it so I could use the front rack and pinion as well as coil overs on the front to get more clearances for headers using a BB in that car. I ended up selling that K member to Mopar Billy, it is in his 1962 A body drag week car I beleive, has been for several years. Hopefully he will chime in here and let us know what he thinks of it now
