Thanx I can't find 'em in the local yards anymore. were they just on trucks or what?

I wouldn't. It provides an anti-reversion effect good for torque. I think he is building a truck, not a race car.
I am porting a slant head for a van, just polishing the intake runner, gasket matching the head only. You can do the same thing on the exhaust side too.
The Performer Intake necks down to 318 port size about 1/2" to 3/4" before the gasket surface. I gasket matched my performer intake and heads on the 360 thet was in my RamCharger. This engine was also about 9.5:1 with the Hughes HEH1523AL cam and 1.6:1 rocker arms for 0.501"/0.539" valve lift. I used a Holley 670 truck Avenger, full length headers, a factory rebuilt hi-stall converter, and the gears were 3.23:1 with 30" tall tires. This engine ran really good with alot of low end torque, and the RamCharger weigh in closer to 5,000 pounds. What I'm tring to say is the performer works for this type of application, just figure out why it leaks.
I would check for cracks arounf the thermostat area, then install studs with sealer into the manifold holes. This is a two for one deal, the sealed studs should seal better, and you don't have to worry about the bolts bottoming out before the thermostat housing is tight. The later stock stamped steel thermostat housings usually seal easier than the thick cast aftermarket housings too.
