for bracket racing, why are you making it difficult? 10.00 motor vs 9.60 motor, does one pay better than the other? See what the cylinders need to get them straight then find a shelf piston to fit that's in the that range.

Here is the problem with the 383, with it's short stroke a dome piston is necessary to achieve adequate compression, with the HEAVY TRW/SPEEDPRO L2293 being discontinued there are no forged 383 dome pistons that I have seen from any of the popular manufacturers, making a custom piston pretty much a necessity. I prefer custom pistons in everything I do anyway!

Man you guys got off easy. Diamond has quoted me a whole lot more for the set of slugs for the 496. Damn rings were $400 just by themselves. Pins another $200, cause my old ones were squarshed. And I ain't getting no fancy coatings either.
I can't remember if that included the pins, but did include the shipping ... and it was 8 years ago.

The Diamond pistons I bought this winter did not come with pins. I used my old ones.

Thanks for all the responses!!
I'm waiting for the engine builder to decide what bore it will take to clean up the block I dropped off last week. As soon as hear from him I'll know what the next will be.
Does anyone know what is the typical max bore for a 383 block? I'm guessing 4.31 but at 4.31 why not go to 4.32 and use a 440 piston? I haven't researched if there is rod available for that combo just thinking aloud.
There is no set in stone number for max bore for any block, you need to have it sonic checked to see what the block you have is capable of being bored to.
As far as just take it to 4.320 and use a 440 piston , there are very few, if any , 440's being built on a standard bore considering the last 440 was produced over 2 decades ago, so you probably would be hard pressed to find a shelf stock 440 piston that would work, remember that outside of the 6pk piston , there is no stock , short CH , 440 piston with valve reliefs so thinking you can use a 440 piston shouldn't even be considered.
