I'm starting the process of building a new 383 for the roadster. Since it doesn't look like anyone makes forged dome pistons for a 4.28 or 4.31 bore with a 1.32 compression height it looks like I may need to order a set of custom pistons. I basically need the Ross 99499 in a 4.28 bore.

What's everyone's favorite source and what kind of price can I expect?

diamond would be a good choice, but how did you end up with a 4.28 bore why not just go with a common size?

A 383 standard bore is 4.25 so .030 over is 4.28 and .060 over is 4.31.

I understand, but i would find and off the shelf piston and go with that bore. be a lot cheaper unless you just want a custom piston.

I would call Ross. They can fix you up. I would estimate $900 w/pins.

RaceTec. If they make it from one of their AutoTec forgings less than $700. I was recently quoted $685 directly from them for a 4.28 replacement for the old TRW 2293 heavy dome piston with 22cc dome only in a 1.53CH. If a member here is a dealer you may find better pricing. Their AutoTec shelf offerings are nice for the money.

I used JE pistons this time around for my new (bigger) predator shortblock. pored a chamber mold, told them what options i wanted, pin height, ring package, exc. and had them in two weeks...I was a ross piston guy for years, but after seeing the quality and fit JE pistons puts out there im changing brands for good..... BTW there about the same price as ross..

Used Ross the first time and Diamond the second. Quality was nice with both.

You do realize that you don't have to do anything in equal increments right. What I mean is.....if you have to order a custom piston anyway, bore it enough to straighten the bore, whatever that number is and order a piston made to fit that bore. No need to go exactly .030 or .060, unless you just want it that big.

Personally, I use nothing but Diamond or Venolia

My last set of custom pistons was bought through Scott Brown and came from CP.
Scott quoted me prices for Ross, Diamond and CP, but recommended me to go with CP.
Really nice finish and fit.

I think Diamond has a shelf piston for that combo.

I would talk to Diamond.. they should have a shelf
piston and if you want to move the CH from stock then
its a $35 charge.. they allow 2 changes to a shelf
piston.. anything more and its called a custom piston..
my last set from them I changed the CH and added a
22cc dish so I could have a good quench and the compression
I wanted (pump gas stuff)... they had them for me
to pick up in 4 days

They dont. They have a flat top but no dome listed. I doubt putting a shelf dome configuration on a shelf flat is a $35 change because it would require a bigger blank. Worth checking though.

If I could get the 4.375 piston in a 4.31 that would be perfect. If its really going to run $1100 I may just scrap the 383 blocks and find a 400 block since I'm pretty much starting from scratch anyway.

I'd be fine running the old domed TRW's if I could find another set.

Great price, nice product! Get exactly what you want for around the price of a shelf Ross. Owned by Wayne Brooks formerly of JE

If your going custom find an easy ring size you like and build to it. It would be bad to have a custom piston and custom ring. If you ever hurt something it will pay off.
