I've been fixing some stuff on my 73 Duster, one of the things not working was the pass side rear turn signal. Anyway, starting from the rear i tested the wiring all was good i pulled the connector block apart, tested for continuity, even ran a jumper wire from the dash side green wire and had the turn sigal working. Then i pulled the steering wheel off and checked for continuity on all the wires on the switch itself. Everone sounded out except for the brown wire which feeds the faulty one. The strange thing is, i inspected the wire from one end to the other and i cant see any damage whatsoever ? Mick

SRT I've had my meter on both ends, one end is the connector you're talking about and the other end is the turn signal switch. 70hemi GTX Nothing personal but i've tested the wiring right up to the switch and it's the wiring in the column. I've swapped the bulbs side for side changed the one on that side, sprayed wd40 into the holders check the ground wires and cleaned them, also added an extra ground to the dash frame. If i swap to the green wire on the connector under the dash, which feeds the other turn signal it works. How can it be a bad ground ?

I changed the screw on the lever because the thread had gone. If the wire on that side shows no continuity, how can it be a ground problem. I've tested every single wire in that connector to the wiper switch and the only one that doesn't sound is the brown wire that feeds that turn signal. Mick

If you are getting power into the switch (obvious by other stuff working) but not getting power out of the switch then I sounds like the switch to me. Testing the wire at the switch eliminates the rest of the wiring back to the bulb and the ground, if no power then it's in the switch (again, provided you are getting power into the switch), if power then the troubles are down the line. I have seen what X is talking about with both the ground issue and with the "normal"switch activation position not making contact and other areas in the sweep making contact. The switch being loose (the 2 halfs not tightly connected through the swing or corrosion on the contacts inside the switch either one can cause a single side issue, it could also be that one of the contacts inside the switch has jsut fallen off. We are talking about ancient switches on most of these things, pull the steering wheel and do some looking, poking and pushing, you'll find it.

I've fitted a longer screw in the switch. I'm testing for breaks in the wire not ohms, tester on each end, i cant see how moving the switch would make any difference. Mick

mopar346 I worked from back to front and the only section that isn't working is the switch to the first connector. When i originally stripped it to do the wobbly turn signal arm, i took the screw out and a small washer fell out from what looked like the rear of the turn signal switch, which i didn't put back in. By doing this you change the positions the contacts touch each other and if it has a bad contact point you will overcome/change that in the throw of the action. As for the washer, I cant think of a washer right off, most I have been into jsut have the screws holding the switch down. I would worry more about the tightness of the 2 halves, this is what X is referring to in one of his post, if the 2 parts of the switch that swing against each other are not tightly crimped then it can make it where the contacts don't touch each other. I might take the switch out and hold it in my hand, but still have it plugged in, switch it so the turn signal in question is activated and squeeze, wiggle and poke it to see if I could make it make contact. Electricity follows a path, if the path is interupted it just stops there and waits for the path to be connected before it proceeds, your path has a gap in it, test light the switch wires on the moving plate and see if there are in fact not making contact.
I'll say it again, if there is power going in and no power coming out, then it is the switch. The switch however may be fixed rather than replaced, bad connections can occur and be cured within the switch.
Good luck!

Just to conclude, i fitted a new switch and it all works ok now, it was tight getting the plug through the column but it went through. Mick
