I'm having a brain fart and needed to ask... I am restoring a '69 Charger 500 and we are getting ready to order tires. The car originally had 14 x 5.5 Road Wheels with redline tires. To be OE correct, the spare should be a 14 x 5.5 steel wheel with matching redline tire... right?? Thanks for the help!!

Thanks!! I knew the steel wheel would be correct but for some reason, I was second-guessing the correct tire.

To answer Mike's question to you:
Your spare rim should be Black.
If you have a Broadcast sheet it will tell what was in the trunk because a Roadwheel could have been ordered as a spare rim in 69.

I still have the spare Road Wheel from my 69 R/T in the basement with a very curb rubbed f 70-14 whitewall on it. That's the only part I didn't give the buyer on my convertible because I forgot I had it.

I politely have to question that statement. The '69 dealer data book as well as the dealer price list do not show that as an option. Do you have a b/c sheet or something else that shows the roadwheel as a spare wheel option in '69?

No offense at all, just trying to learn more.

I would not consider that as a fact just yet.

See my post above.

I emailed Doug Hammer to chime in, maybe I am wrong on this since I have no documentation to back it up.
Was something I always thought I knew and it's been a while I had thought I decoded all the dates on my old car's wheels.

I am also of the opinion for 1969: "no b-body ROAD wheels in the trunk".

How exactly would the hold down work?

I spoke to Doug and he says a 69 Sheet wouldn't indicate that like a 70 and up sheet. Also he knows of no documentation to support what I said.

When I get a chance I'll look at the #'s on the spare that's sitting in my basement and compare them to what I have on file of my old Coronet.

So I stand corrected. I was certain I learned it over the years buy going by what I've seen in trunks and what I was told by others has been disproved.
Sorry for the confusion.
Ron

Thank you for all of the replies! Yes, I knew the spare steel wheel is supposed to be black. Not really a glossy black though, more of a semi gloss or medium gloss. I can see where someone could mistake a Road Wheel for being a spare. It seems like any time you see a car at a show, that was "correctly" restored, they would always through a matching wheel in the trunk.
