I actually have a 97 Monaco motor home with the 325 horse 8.3 cummins. I read a lot about lift pumps going bad and have started wondering about this thread.

Would it be wise to buy an extra lift pump and keep it in my tool box? They only seem to be real expensive if you are stuck somewhere and they are not available.

heck I would just change it, it was like $56 bucks. and we love out 97 monaco. I have looked at a lot of motorhomes and we like our floor plan a lot better than most.

Less money than I thought. Maybe I will change it at 80,000 miles.

If I could ask, where did you get it and what was the part number? The part number may depend on the engine serial number although, I could be wrong.

From what I could find the Cummins part is several hundred while the chinese imports are around $95.00.

The Monaco's actually are pretty good rigs once you learn how to work on them. If you have an issue with your throttle control I may be able to help. That one was a real expensive pain.

i'll get the part number for you in the morning if it's on the box, I really don't know where the service guy picked it up. it may be on the box also. I looked it up on line and came up with a part number and told the guy to stop by and pick up one. he wanted to change the water separator/filter assy. he thought that was the problem. I told him after we change the pump we will tackle that if it doesn't fix it. yes that throttle control worries me, when I first got it I lost all throttle and was concerned. I cleaned the terminal where it plugs in by the gas pedal and it has never done it again. what did you find out?

it was a cummins part number 4988749, I did have to go to NAPA and get a coupling because the fuel line was a different size. cost me $3 I have no idea where he got it but it was a genuine cummins pump. I did a search and found price starting at $83 down. he charged me $56

Thanks, I'll use that part number and see what I can get. I close friend of mine says that Cummins has re-manufactured parts including lift pumps that work as well as new stuff. I'll find out.

The throttle control can really become an issue. Mine never worked properly from the day it was new. Left me in trouble several times.

As far as I know this is the only person that can fix them:

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=cruise+king+llc

His name is Steve Boler. Be real nice to him and maybe he will sell you a spare. He rebuilds them completely which is not cheap but then neither is next day air back and forth. I used the spare just once. Nice guy and you can download a bunch of test procedures from his webb site.

I have an old 3500 98.5 5.9 with the VP44 pump love the truck and the lack of a payment book, but there are a few item they all need.

To me there is no down side to replacing the factory lift pump or at least have provisions to go to a secondary pump; its not if the factory lift pump dies its when it dies; And its always on a weekend 1000 miles from home at night.
also being able to monitor the fuel pressure feeding the Injection pump is a mandatory add on.

Yes, that is the black sealed box. It operates the throttle and the cruise control and the transmission and the pac break and, and, and. And you do not want it to go bad. They are totally rebuildable and not available new. As far as I know they are the weakest link in the whole coach. I also wonder if it is the reason that you can buy Dynasty's with 50,000 miles for $25,000.

The manufacturer actually told us that they don't know a thing about them. Thank God for Steve. Good luck.
