In reality what horsepower numbers can be achieved from a 451 stroker on pump gas and or race gas. With a compression ratio in line to prevent part breakage or constant maintenance..Torque numbers ?? This came by fedex yesterday for my low deck build...

If you're going to run that intake then you'll be limited to standard port heads which means you'll be in the 600 to 650 range for power. A good set of ported Edelbrock heads should get you there. MCH has a good program for those heads or have Dwayne work them over. If it is a race engine then go with a decent amount of compression in order to make everything work better. 12:1 should be possible without causing too many problems. A solid roller cam is the best way to make power if the budget allows.

MM magazine did a 452 build with single plane and 11.5 compression and hyd roller and achieved 675 hp...
Id be more than pleased with 550 to 600hp with a motor that was dependable...

In reality, 720-780HP, 500+ lb-ft from 3500 rpm to 7500 rpm on 91-93 octane with Edelbrock RPM heads, Indy single plane and a single 1100cfm Dominator.

You can get 540 HP @ 5500 rpm, 500+lb-ft of torque from 3800-5600 rpm, with ported factory 346 iron heads, 8.9:1 and an XE285HL camshaft.

Id like to stick with the crossram for obvious reasons!! Id love some carb and head recommendations for the motor at 600hp..

The first low deck 383 C.I. non stroker street motor I built a long time ago, when those intakes where avaible new(circa 1972)used a stock set of early iron heads (we did put 1.74 exhaust valves in them )the customer had and a Isky 505T solid roller cam. He had the intake with a set of early Holley6 50 DP carbs, that combination with a stock converter was a big dead dog under 3000 RPM The customer had promised me before starting the build he would buy a good race converter, electric fuel pump and good ignition also. He didn't That motor was a rocket ship between 3000 and 8500 RPM Knowing what I know now I would put a set of Holley 750 D.P. on that intake and be prepared to rejet and possibly mod the carbs. idle circiuts and power valves to meet the needs of the motor to drive and idle nice On the cam a solid roller with between 250 and 264 degrees @.050 with 106 to 110 LSA with as much lobe lift you can get would be my choice, the converter size and stall speed would determine the LSA and where I installed the intake lobe center in reference to TDC Last thing on the heads is to buy the best ones you can afford, CNC Eddy RPM would be my choice for that intake You might want to try soem spacers under the carbs after you get it going, try one to two inch at first

As to carburetors, I've no experience with duals and those manifolds so silence is my best option.

Cylinder heads only need to be any iron or aluminum head that will get you 285cfm @ .500" lift and 295cfm @ .600" lift. So that would be any ported 902, 906, 915, 213, 346, 452 or a service prepped RPM or Stealth.

I built a couple of spacers to turn the Carter AFB's east & west like Ma Mopar wanted them. Had to fabricate the carb linkage, but it fits & works good on the Edelbrock heads. Idles good with no flat spots on acceleration. (I found both carbs on E-Bay for under $100.)

I'd use a pair of 500 cfm Edelbrock carbs. They sell them jetted for dual carb use. I have a pair of them that I've used on tunnel rams, Indy X rams and a ModMan intake. I've never run one of the STR intakes but they'll probably work on that too. I'd highly recommend getting a wide band setup. You're going to need it to dial in that intake.

Is this going to be mainly a street car driver ? Or do you plan to mainly just race it ? You could easily build something close to what I built and get 550 to 600 hp with no problem. My eng is a pump gas eng as I knew I was going to drive it on the street 99% of the time so I built it with good quench as it runs good with no ping at all on 92 pump. And my eng is no race eng and I really have never got after it yet to really get as much performance as I can. But I built it to run and drive good on the street for long runs. I do have a few more cubes at 493 as since I used a 440 block and needed a crank it made sense to add the cubes since I was building a mild stroker to make enough torque to push my 3700 lbs into the 10's in full street mode where I can drive it anywhere including to the track. I used the basic Indy EZ heads as I like that you dont need offset rockers and the exh port is stock location. To me they are about the same as the Eddy RPM heads but I feel with alot of porting they should have a little more potential then the RPM heads. One day down the road I may step it up some and have my EZ heads really ported alot. The EZ is a little more money then the RPM but I got them on a good deal from Dwayne Porter as they were only about $200 more then the RPM heads on sale at that time. I also do not use a roller cam as since I knew I was going to drive it alot I did not want to worry about the valvetrain by uing all the spring pressure you need to use with a good solid roller so I went with a solid flat tappet. And my eng has 10.6 comp with quench using the D-dish pistons.
Use a good aluminum head that will flow good and I would have a custom cam speced to your eng as I had Dwayne spec my cam for my combo. The crossram may cost you from 30 to about 75 hp from what I have heard but you can still get it done with it.
So I use a pump gas friendly 10.6 comp and Dwayne did work my heads a little so they flowed about 329 @ .600 lift and my solid cam is 264 & 270 @ .050 with .585 and .592 lift but I use 1.6 rockers that puts lift about .630. The LSA is 110 and I have it on a 106 ICL. And the idle is actually smoother then I thought it would be as I love some rump rump in my idle. I use the Indy dual plane that works nice on the street with my 850 DP. But I am sure a good single plane with a dominator would make more power but the dual plane is so nice to drive on the street. I am guesing my pump gas 493 makes about 600 flywheel hp to push my 3700 lb 63 to 10.70's so far and as I said its not a blueprinted race eng as its a simple mild very drieable street combo. You should have no problem at 451 cubes making your 600 hp as long as you do a smart build and use the right parts for the combo. I know alot of guys still run the factory type crossram and make good power. Money was also another reason I am not running the crossram right now. Good luck with it , Ron

All terrific info but it sure is not an easy decision on which direction to go...

Street to strip time would be 75/25 percent..
Ive assembled several motors in stock form so I am embarrassed to say my high performance knowledge is lacking ...But I am learning quickly thanks to friends, builders and info from you guys...
Im sure I want what most would like..A reliable pump gas motor that sounds like it belongs on the strip yet can be driven easily on the street. Doesn't dip in your wallet every week..But when the loud pedal drops you can see some air under the front tires... And has a ten as the first number on the ET time slips...
