I had read where guys were buying many sets of connecting rods to find 8 perfect ones to do. had one motor for national events and another motor for other events. using 5.13 or higher gears spinning the crap out of the motors.

If you stay out of the top classes and don't try to outrun all the big dogs, stock can still be relatively cheap to run. My buddy Mike Jeffrey holds the national record in V/SA and finished 2nd in Div. 5 in a car you could pretty easily duplicate for less than $10K. In a land of $100K+ A/SA cars that is dirt cheap fun. The only time the motor has been apart in the last 2 years was for teardowns.

And stage them with three quarts of oil so that there is no oil pump drag for the last couple hundred feet.
I heard that one from a guy who had an Olds wagon he raced........I forget the letter , but it was up there.
He told me that it was a late round or record chasing move.
I just shook my head.

There are a few stock eliminator racers on Moparts. Most like myself are just lurking around. To answer some....It can be expensive, it just depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

There are TONS of Stock eliminator cars out there and it is only a small percentage of them that can come close to setting the class record. It is after all an index class. So running fast really only matters if you come up against a "same class" car in the eliminator and then its a heads up race. So as said above, racing in stock can be very expensive, or not so much, just depends on what you choose to do.

I currently race in IHRA with a crate motor combo that is IHRA-only. There is also Pure Stock for IHRA only and "regular" Stock for NHRA and IHRA. You are now allowed aftermarket seats in Stock like they have for SS, like Kirkey. As far as "best" combo, I like the idea of figuring out a class that doesn't have a lot of fast cars in it to minimize the potential heads-up runs. Finding an obscure combo that isn't heavily factored is also good, but difficult to find. It seems that the faster the car/class, the more consistent/predictable it is. That's why there are so many cars in the top half of the group.

I'm working on a Dodge Aspen wagon NHRA combo, but it's slow going due to money and time. Lot's of strict rules to go by. Lack of knowledge about Thermoquads have kept me away so far. But a friend will be helping me out in that area.

Look at what Larry Hill did at Indy. Showed up with a V/S truck and was #1 qualifier at 2.3 under. Obscure combo and he was a hero. It gothim hit with 29 hp, but the combo is still fast in it's new class.

The best way to learn about stock racing is to get a rule book.. It took me several readings just to figure out how to determine what class I could run... But, its much easier once you figure a couple... But the rule book will tell you what you can and can not do... You will quickly learn that there is more you can not do than do.... Especially in the engine... There are a lot of racers that are very passionate about this class and live to race in it...

The official title is Stock Eliminator.

We can get rid of the back seat for roll bar installation. We can also use racing type front seats for which I refuse to do on either car as I feel we are moving too far away from the Stock part.

The 440 Six Packs recently got a few HP back and are a decent package. 440 4bbl, 67 in particular, are good right now. Low compression 340's have a little edge over the high compression right now so for an a body they are good although we did set the national record with a wounded hi comp car back in May.

As most have said it is a very time and money intensive racing. When we first started in back in the late 70's it was about getting together at the shop every night and using brain power to wring every last bit of ET from a car. Now it has switched more to the money side.

I think that one has a lot to do with the camshaft rules on six cylinder vehicles in stock. It's almost like letting a Super Stock car run in a stock class. I gotta say, he sure knew how to read the rule book.

July 19th should be "Drive Like Rockford Day". R.I.P. Jimmie.

Maxie,
If you should be fortunate enough to have the resources, find a fast combo and be able to set a record, or be a top qualifier, you should also be ready to go to "the barn"!
It's mandatory when setting a record and it's possible to be "chosen" at any other time, but you need to be prepared to tear the engine down to verify that everything is legal and within the rules!

It's also usually cheaper to buy a proven combo than spend a lot of time & money figuring out exactly what it likes and needs to go fast. That also applies to the obscure, under-factored combos that you might find. You need to have a good combo to start out with because the classes all have a respective "index" which is a minimum performance standard that needs to be met. You can run faster than the index, and many fast cars can run and dial-in more than one second under. But if you can't run the index, you are dialed in at the index anyway and you start out at a disadvantage.

From that video, sure seems like a disproportionate number of Mopars in (and outside of) "the barn".
