Hooking up a msd 6al to my slant 6 to get rid of the lean burn system. Which wires in the Chrysler electronic distributor are + and -

Are you changing the distributor? The leanburn one has no advance mechanism in it.

MSD wiring diagram.

I did change the distributor to a pre-lean burn. It is a Chrysler distributor so the wires are black and white. Both go to a reluctor so I don't know which is which.

Chad,

Just a guess, Black would be negative.

Hook it up one way and put a timing light on it. Flip the wires, go with the wiring that is more advanced and time it from there.

IIRC, when wires are transposed for normal, timing is retarded with the mopar electronic stuff. MSD used to have the wiring transposed. Always made for some fun when swapping.

The pickup reads the front edge and rear edge of the reluctor. Wired properly it reads the front edge, wired backward it reads the rear. As stated before, it will change the timing. On my Slant the change was almost 30°.

Make sure the small red wire has voltage in key on and start. Some of the junctions you can lose voltage when in start postion. Guess how I know that?
