hey guys I see different B5 blue cars and to my eye they kinda look different in "intensity" and brightness. Of course the light plays a huge part in this.

But Im wondering if the earlier B5 Blue cars were a brighter blue (with less black in the mix) than the later ones?

Ive seen some 68 and 70 Chargers/B Bodies that really light up in a "kinda" B5blue and thats the look Im after.

Is the 68 mix/code different from the others and if so, what is the correct paint code for the brighter Blue ?

Or maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me; I really am after the one that pops in the sun.

Anyone know for sure?

1968 was QQ1 Medium Metallic Blue. Different color than B5 which came in later years. I like QQ1 but is personal preference. Here is mine.

B5 did differ under the code b5...the paint codes started with a letter designating the year that it started..eb5 in 69 used through 70 then in 71 it changed to gb5 which was a bit darker I believe.. E being 69 f is 70 g is 71 etc..

Just went through this on a '70 RoadRunner. Here's an example of how the older colors don't always translate into the newer formulas. EB5 is available in PPG. If you mix it in their Deltron line it's one color. Mix it in their Shopline and it's another color. I'm not talking the difference in color from the '69-'70 color vs. the '71 and up color... this is the same code, formula but different product lines within PPG. Years ago I painted with Deltron. The Shopline is a "newer" "cheaper" line. The kicker is that the Deltron mix is no where near reminiscent of the B5 I remember. Shopline however, matches perfectly. I've heard through the grapevine that Shopline is actually the old Deltron line renamed and that's why the colors are more accurate.

Regardless of color or what brand of paint you use make sure you have the paint supplier mix up a small sample first. Then do a spray out and see if it's the right color. If not it can be tinted or reformulated. It's much better to find out the color is wrong BEFORE you buy a gallon and a half of it!

Try to avoid tinting. Avoid variants and stick with a standard you're happy with (after a spray out). Get a mix that's been cocktailed and you may never get it exactly the same if you need to respray a repair area at a later date
