I don't know if you guys love or hate this question but I read them all and this one's for me.

I have a 67 Belvedere that I'm currently installing the US Tool chassis stiffening pack and frame ties and will get leaf relocation and mini tubbed next. The car came with a 75 440 that was just mag checked clean and is stock bore. The plan is to run a Passon 4 speed mostly on the street and aiming for 550+ HP on 91 clear. (because I've already had 500 and more just sounds like more fun) Rear suspension will be Caltracs leaf and stock front.

I'm assuming a stroker kit will give the most bang for the buck, but looking for guidance or recipe for top to bottom engine. I'd like to stay below $9000 if possible with a competent machinist and my own assembly. The rear end gears haven't been purchased so we can go anywhere there. I'm not looking for highway economy or comfort. Just to the car shows and back with a nasty lope of an idle, lots of snort and a smile on my face.

I built a mild 493 for my 63 Sport Fury street car. Its pushed the 3700 lbs to a 10.76 best on 92 pump and through the pipes just as I drive it. If you click my link and go down near the bottom to the December 2011 update it tells you about my build. That should get you started with one idea. Ron

You can buy a rebuilt 500+hp unit on ebay for less than 9k. I'd look at used parts, such as heads, intake, carb, headers...these can really save you some cash. You can also find good deals here in the engine section or on racingjunk. Good luck

Thanks guys,

383man, Are you able to run 10.6:1 without octane booster?

Mr.Yuck, I look at eBay, Craigslist, and of course here in the Big Block thread everyday. I'm not comfortable buying complete engines from people I don't know or at least have a track record in a community like this. I'm not afraid to use some used components but I need a good idea of what direction I should go before purchasing.

I hear ya. I bought the 440 in this car from a member here. Been beating on it for 3 years. Had the 1st problem ever this weekend w/ a broken valve adjuster nut, but that was probably my fault form over tightening. You should be able to build a beast for 9k. I'm around 11.2:1 but we have 93 and I run a snow Performance meth/H2O kit. Rons car runs very good and it isn't crazy radical. You can get away w/ a little more compression w/ Aluminum heads.

Have the block rough bored first so you know what size pistons to order with the stroker kit I owuld order a 4.250 stroke with 7.100 long BB Chevy size rods and crank throw sizes, I would shoot for 10.5 to 10.8 to 1 compression ratio with aluminum heads and 9.25 to 9.5 to 1 with iron heads. I would probally chose a Comp Cams XE285HL or maybe the next bigger cam the XE295HL with the stick tranny I have one of those cams in one of my 3.91 stroke pump gas 440 motors, no way I can fool anyone on it having a stock cam in it I would buy either a set of the Eddy RPM or if you want room for future growth then a set of the Eddy Victor Max Wedge with the proper intake manifold, 4150 or 4500 carb. Your choice I do have a bunch of good use hard parts in stock now for a build like yours, PM me if your interested in buying some proven parts (CNC ported Eddy RPM heads, rockers, intake and so on )I'm getting greedy on wanting more power so some of the street parts need another home so I can have room for the race parts

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

Yes its no problem at all. Its 10.6 comp with the aluminum heads and I built good .045 quench in the eng. And my solid flat tappet cam is a custom grind from Dwayne Porter who kept the intake valve closing timed right to keep my cylinder pressure down low enough that I run 92 pump and 37 total timing with no ping at all.
