When did you do it? What valve size and lift is he generally accepted threshold?

Current plan is 2.14/1.81 valves and .500" lift (figured with a 1.5 rocker ) and about 300 duration. ( I'd have to pull the card)

When do you need to do it, or when should you do it?

I always chamfer the top of the block if it protrudes into the combustion chamber around the valves.

me too! been doing it since early '70's. 426 wedge nascar blocks were factory notched for intake and exhaust.

There's a much easier solution, unless it's a resto type build. (Use a 400 block)

383 short block that needs no machining or a 400 that needs everything - Ive put the 400 up for sale. If I were to use it it would be a 451 stroker - since I have those parts and the machining wouldnt be alot different than a stock 400.
Likely never get to that. Ive had it ten years. I have two really nice low use 383s - no ridge and clean cranks.
