You'll need a 4.10 and numerically lower carrier/diff.

That is where you begin I have done a few of these and until recently, I never had a case spreader which is what the pros use. You may be able to reuse the press on carrier and pinion gear bearings if you can get them off the old ones, but I have always bought new. The one thing I found to be invaluable is a set of set-up bearings. In the kit you get a selection of shims for the carrier and pinion gear and a set of honed bearings for a slip fit on the carrier. Insert the pinion gear in the case with a pressed on bearing (new or used). Start with the original shim pack on the pinion and add or subtract shims as needed. Assemble without the seal because you will be working up to the final setting. Bolt the new ring gear in place on the carrier (new bolts are a good idea) I start with the old shim pack on the carrier and adjust as necessary. This involves a LOT of trial and error. I am not an expert. Once you have established the proper pinion depth and backlash then you can press the new bearings on the carrier and pinion gear and assemble the rear. It is a lot easier to do this with the rear out of the car. Or you can just take your ride to the local differential shop and pay the man I have always had a lot more time than money and I am not afraid to get dirty.

If your spool or posi unit has a ring gear spacer in it now you can PROBALLY reuse the old one by removing the spacer If not you will need a new series three carrier or spool to match the ring and pinion used
What he said
When I picked up my Dana, it had 5.38s in it, but it had a spacer. 3.73s bolted right in. So check for a spacer before buying parts.

What ring/pinion set could I use for a direct swap? 488s ? 456s ?
Two groups 4.56 up and 4.10 down, not sure with the new 4.30. Just remembered we broke our 5.13, next day put a 4.10 on the same spool so it had room to use both. 5.13 to 4.56 you won't see much change, waste of time imo

I have heard that the racing Pro series 4.10 gear sets, all sets, are the 4.56 and above ring gear types as far as what they fit onto. I've never seen or set up a set of them so it is all hearsay to me Dana didn't make them Richmond did My current drag car has a Dan 60 in it with Mark Williams 40 spline axles and it had a set of 5.86 pro gears in it on a Mark williams aluminum spool , I was told that it had a set of Pro 5.13 gears, not so I changed them last winter and got a education on Dana 60 gear sets and spools and posi, nobody makes a three series 40 spline spool so I ended up using a stock set of Dana Corp. 4.56 gears out of a old pick up rear end on a new Mosar 40 spline steel spool. If I could have bought a three sereis 40 spline spool I would have put a set of 4.10 in my car instead of the 4.56 I did buy a set of Richmond 4.30 for my Dana 60, they only fit the three series carriers and spool also
