Hello --

I have a real N96 70 Sixpack Challenger.

If I were to add the belt molding and rocker molding to the car would it
hurt the value?

I have always liked the way these stainless pieces looked on the car.

Opinions are greatly welcomed. I don't want to do something that I will regret later, specially since I will have to drill holes in the panels..

many thanks in advance!

Bill

Got me a NEW Project
1970 GTX 440+6, 4 spd, 4.10 Dana and N96 FE5 (top/bottom) and black bucket interior.
Original transmission and Dana - Engine is a service replacement block.

Body has all stamped #s + VIN/TRIM tag and door sticker. Been hunting like all hell to find the Build Sheet.

garage find, only had 41,850 miles on ODO.

Will it hurt the value? Yup! Is it your car? Yup! Do what you like, unless you're looking to flip it for more $$$$$$. My

For what it's worth, I added a driver's remote mirror to my GTX that I bought from the original owner & was in mostly original condition. That involved drilling holes that weren't there, but on the other hand they could be covered over if necessary with the original mirror & inside door trim. I've always wanted to add hood pins, but just can't bring myself to drill into that original sheet metal. Not easy going back on that one.

Flipping the car is not important to me...

I already put a line in my will to bury me in it... :big grin:

I was more curious if it would drop the value some crazy amount.
Thats all ..

Thanks for the input.

Generally speaking deduct the cost of reversing the changes and you'll be pretty close in determining value impact.

I agree to some it will deduct value,,,,,

BUT
To some it will add desirability.
Value is in the mind of the potential buyer.

If it were mine I would make it the way it the way I would be most happy with it.

IMHO,adding options won't affect the value much if at all, in some cases I believe it can increase the value. In my mind, the only exception to that would be your car is restored to a very high level (OEM specs) it's numbers matching & documented with its original fender tag & build sheet.

I know most moparts members will disagree, but look at the cars that actually sell & how much they sell for.

for example,
Put two 70 Road Runners next to each other, both came exactly the same from the factory with low options & are restored to the same overall condition. One is restored duplicating its original build per the documentation, the other car was restored as the owner would have ordered it. Your standing there with the money in your pocket......would you buy the bench seat column shift car with AM radio because "that's how it came" or would you buy the one right next to it that has buckets/console, am/fm 8 track,an air grabber hood & dust trail stripe added?

Adding those two particular options, belt and rocker moldings, will not increase the value if you or your heirs were to sell the car.

In the realm of these cars, those two aren't the options most looks to add to a car. But they are sort of on the subtle side. With the impact of a N96 six pack challenger, most will not put much focus on them.

Both require you to drill into the paint and wedge over the paint (hood molding). The holes and marks from the belt molding are right at eye level. I can see blending paint to fix the rockers. But the belt molding would be much more complicated and tricky to fix right.

Aside... in 1970 Challengers, would the only way to get belt moldings is with the A46 molding package that includes valance and tail cover moldings??

Not to derail this thread, but what is the opinion on adding subframe connectors such as the ones by US Car tool ?? They can be made to look almost factory and are on the bottom on the car....yet add structural integrity if you want to add some hp.

Depends on rarity and value of the car restored to stock.

Is the undercarriage of the car undercoated also?

Are those the ones that weld along the floor pan. IMHO, to remove those its hard more labor to remove floor pan welds. If it were the end to end ones, those are much easier to remove and cover up.

Subframe connectors are under the car. They don' take someone with body and paint skills to remove and make unnoticeable.

A multi carb car or hipo conv mopar will have more impact from subframe connectors. Other cars not so much if any. Depends on focus/level of restoration too.

Same goes to some extent with original poster question. If it were a 383 car, it would have less impact even percentage-wise.

Adding the stainless will up the value to YOU! That is really all that matters.

Now burying yourself in it will most deffinatly hurt it's value.

Plus the interior most likely would not have that "new car smell".

Doubtful.

Is the 26k orig mile car original paint though?

Actually it's the A63 - "moulding package" & YES, it includes the mouldings for the front valance & taillight panel.

opps. IIRC, A46 was the 71 code?

Is the A63 the only way you could get the upper door moldings? Where they available as a separate option?

Not original paint...Original owner made it into a World of Wheels ISCA show car from day one...lots of chrome and velour and wild paint...Thank God he left the interior bone stock original..Didnt take too much to bring it back from the 70s look..Never seen rain or snow..Most solid rust free Mopar Ive ever owned..Undercarriage and all..I really want to add the mirror AND I have a set of rear window louvers...I know they are only correct for 71 but damn they are cool..

Lots of great info here!!!

I am going to add the stainless belt, hood/fender edge and rocker moldings..
I really like the way it looks on the car, it breaks things up some.

even if it dings the resale price a little - i will be happy for as long as I own it
and thats what matters...

the car is so well documented and in Galen's registry/decoded, it kind of wrong to do
but what they hay..

Yep, A63 or SE only for Belt molding, rear Astrotone molding and front Stone shield molding.......
