Most of them are low miles because no one can afford the fuel. Other than that they seem to be OK, they make more TQ than a 12V from the factory

Nah Dave,no worse and in some instances better than a 5.9, I could pull 14.5 out of mine at 65mph and 10 to 12 towing the 24ft enclosed.

My brother also has a V10 5-speed/3.54's that he can squeeze 15mph at reasonable hiway speeds.

I'll back you on that.

We had a '96 V10 auto 2wd that could do 15mpg all day on the highway. Around town though it was heavy on fuel.

An honest Dodge salesperson I know told me at the time the difference in fuel mileage between the 3.9, 318, 360, and V10 was 1mpg.

Don't expect more than 10 mpg from a '98 and newer.
Auto trans are still an issue especially with plowing.
The hydro boost failed on my truck for unknown reasons.

If rust is an issue, check the rear shackle mounts. And the hitch frame if you are going to do any towing. I think they even had a recall on the class 4 hitches and the dealer would add a support to each side of the hitch frame.

I have owned and operated lots of these trucks and a 5.9 gas engine cruising at only 65 with 3.55 gears will get close to 20, your figures on the V10 match my findings but it gets even worse at higher speeds, they all get way worse as the speed goes up, my 2 wd V6 ram would get over 20 at just 65. Most guys get 9-12 with a V10 and that is why there are so many low mile ones out there.

BTW I love me a V10 and have 2 complete engines sitting in the shop, looking for something to put them in

I had a 96 2WD dually that got 10 MPG. Didn't matter what you did or how you drove it, it just got 10. I did love that truck but it was originally from Minnesota so it was starting to have some rust issues so it had to go.

went ahead and bought it.Truck was much better shape than described. The cats though are rattling and there is a driver side manifold leak.I hope its the exhaust but I here what sounds like possible rod bearing noise.I hope not but can the pan be dropped in the truck and the bearings changed?

There was a TSB out on them to separate the #7 and #9 cylinder plug wires so they don't run together in the loom. Crossfire between the two (like a V8 does #5 and #7) was causing a lean condition and burning the piston. If it gets bad enough it can score the cylinder wall. Hope that's not the case for you.

I like the idea of the V10 a lot. I had 2002 CTD and I liked it too, but it was heavy on the maintenance end and I never drove it enough to make it pencil out. For what I need (no commuting and occasional heavy towing) a V10 would be great. There is a V10 1 ton 2wd dually QC in my area on CL that looks like a cream puff with low miles and I need to check it out. Glad to hear about the TSB and if I bought the first thing I would do would be a custom set of wires and careful routing.

Look for disappearing anti-freeze. My '98 V10 QC SB 5spd 4x4 had the cracked head issue. Started reporting lose of anti-freeze when it had upper 20k's and had the head replaced under warranty at around 40k. I did gasket match the plenum, intake, heads and exhaust manifolds before it was all buttoned back together. That truck got 15 highway, 12 town and 10 towing no matter what. My '95 V10 RC LB 5spd 4x4 got 16-18 highway and 13 town / towing / emergency response.

My 96' 2500 V10 4X4 has been an awesome truck. It has 154,000+ on it now & has been virtually trouble free. Only replaced, recently front axle u-joint, rotors, brakes & T stat housing from plastic to upgraded newer alum housing due to a crack, belt tensioner, belt & still on second battery. All else is still all original parts. In Michigan though, so it it going to rust off of the frame within the next few years.....
