yeah...sounds like a stupid question,but does anyone have any tips on best way to attach a cherry picker chain to a hemi to pull. no sizeable bolt holes to use. I can likely wrap chain around front accessory bracket,but not much options at rear of engine. book and dealer says pull intake and use special plate with intake bolts. 2 concerns with that, 1st haven't located a plate, 2nd 10 6mm bolts in aluminum sounds like potential trouble. any thoughts out there appreciated. thanks gregg

You could always use the old seatbelt trick, but rest assured people have been doing heart transplants forever with the old intake plate that looks like a set of brass knuckles without any problems.

And if the new Hemi had a carburetor that one could unbolt, that'd probably work.

Maybe pulling the intake manifold now is the best way to go.

The whole engine doesn't weigh as much as a LA motor, it's like 100lb lighter. That may make it easier to find sufficient strength. Four 5/16" (8mm) bolts in tension will support it many times over. Heck, one could probably go to 6mm bolts (1/4").

Somewhere yesterday on this board I saw a picture of a lifting bracket that attached at the exhaust manifold bolts.

I hope someone has a better answer than this one.

I'm fully aware the new 5.7s are not a carbed deal, the reference was only to put mind at ease as far as the method of attaching and the weight involved. And picking it up by the manifold attaching points is a good idea as well, alls that would be needed there is some high tensile steel cord and 4 angled brackets to lift the whole shooting match.

i know when pulling a hemi from a car the dealer uses a fixture that bolts to the front and rear of the motor

When they manufactured that truck it went in from the bottom. If its a 2X4 you might take a look at doing that. I don't think I'd try iy on a 4X4.

The best way to pull the engine is of course with the special tool from miller. It can be pulled without it just as easy. You must remove the intake to remove the engine with or without the tool. the rear attachment point of the tool in the center of the lifter valley can be used to bolt a chain in a loop. There the chain can be attached to the engine with 2 8mm bolts threaded into iron block. Plenty strong enough to lift the engine out of the truck. I have done it this way several times without a hitch.
