Thinking about changing my 26' Pace Shadow trailer from 15" tires to 16". Those of you that run the 16" tires, what size/brand do you run? Would I be better off with a trailer tire (like GY Marathon) or with a LT truck tire? It is my understanding that ST tires (special trailer) are only speed rated for 60-65 mph. I'm really tired of the ST225/75R15 blow outs. I put on load range E, and air them to 90 psi cold. Still had a failure last week  Thanks, Brian

I'm thinking you are right with the 3 years is norm statement. I have tried various brands and rated tires and it seems like 3 years is the ticket no matter how many miles on them. I actually think the less miles due to the way we use our trailers has an effect on their longevity. I was also thinking of changing to 16" tires but not sure if thats the fix

I just returned from a 3200 mile round trip and one of our 4 year old 16" tires gave out 160 miles from home on the return trip. Checked them over before we left and the tread wear was pretty significant and was pretty much thinking that would be the last trip for them..... I was actually pleased that we were going to replace a set of tires because they actually wore out!! But.... the more I think about this, and read, I'm betting the 235/85/16 tires are going to live the same 2 year life span our 15" tires did because the trailer now resides in the desert. My dad had it in SoDak and the climate is alot more tire freindly than the oven I live in. The Load Star tires (china) were originals on this Cargo Mate trailer and were E rated and said 10 ply with a 95psi max psi rating. The set I'm putting on also say 10 ply E rated, but have a max psi of 80...also a china tire. The only other seemingly "better" option out there for the 16" is a "G" rated tire, but you have to have the rims to support them (110psi) and they are not cheap... 250-300 range, and then 150+ per rim. Also most of the wheels that fit this range are 8 lug although I did find some 6 lugs that would fit the bill. I just hate to make a $1500+ investment to find out that the climate in which I live/tow will kill them off in 2-3 years anyways. I've even found that after 4 years I best chit can the E rated tires on my pickup. Last set of Michelin LTX i owned got chit canned at 5 years still had 8/32 tread..... they were dry rotted.

I have heard the same thing about the LT tires but in some states it is illegal to run them on a trailer??? The law states it must be a trailer tire only on a trailer and most of them only have a speed rating of 60mph so we know that also will kill tires as I often run above that speed. Maybe next time I will try the LT tires and if I get stopped then deal with it at that time - play dumb right

Look at maxxis trailer tires rated one of the best, we found out the hard way and this is what we learned-LOOK AT THE DATE CODE ON THE TIRE-you might have a new trailer but 5 yr old tires, Michelin, goodyear tires weather check REAL bad-they dry out faster-keep the tires at the recommended COLD pressure and keep them there, buy the highest load rating you can afford, thats why we went maxxis, $150 a tire delivered to my door from discount tire.-steve

Personally I would get a different trailer before I would try to swap wheels and tires. Because your still have too small of axles after all that work and money.
Personally I like goodyear marathon trailer tires because I have had excellent luck with them. My last 4 15" I bought were still made in the US, not sure about today. Before this trailer I ran 3 set's of 6 16" goodyears on my 49' trailer and ran 125K miles and NEVER had a blow out, never in 8 years of trailing.
As most of you now know now, never buy a enclosed trailer with 15" wheels. There nothing but trouble and allows the dealer to sell you the trailer cheap now. Is it really cheapest in the long run? Heck no!!
I'm thinking folks who live in Az or some place like that, the heat must be really hard on tires during storage.
And the other thing is most folks have there enclosed trailers overloaded and don't even know it and that's why there blowing tires. That's what causes blow outs, over weight and under inflated. Kitchen cabinets don't belong in trailers, there way too heavy and stuff like that.
I have 15" goodyears on my open trailer and got back from a trip out west. another 3900 miles and luckily no tire trouble. We have been to Fla, Niagara Falls, Mich and Wyoming so far this year and no tire trouble. Honestly my trailer tires have over 50K miles on them now and they are 4 years old now.
Lastly always, ALWAYS run your trailer tires 10# over what the sidewall says, always!
Simple trailer doing what it's designed to do, it does not have extra tool boxes and tire racks added onto the trailer that makes extra weight.
