Found 3 pistons, in a set of 8 .030 over size replacements, that were standard size. Even better, they were stamped .030 on the top, just like the other 5 in the set. Box packed early Monday, or late Friday??

Anyway, Gary is right, wwaaaayyyyy too much piston to cylinder wall clearance.

jess

Yeah, it's hopped up to over 160...

Sounds to me like that engine has been apart before. A standard piston in a 0.020 over hole rattles around like a baseball bat in a garbage can. Unless someone was totally incompetent, that would have been picked up on initial assembly.

If he picked it up from the reman company I'd go back and drop it off again.

If it came from an individual, he needs to order some new pistons and rings.

Has the engine been run like that?

It certainly won't last long that way.

Master, again and still

Not normal at all, did you verify this with a caliper and a bore gauge? I have seen engines that had only a few holes bores and the rest standard. If it is truly 20 over on the bore and they stuck a standard piston in the hole with 20 over rings then the rings will flex on every pass and fatique in short order (like hundreds of miles). Over size rings can argueable be used in a situation where the standard bore is just about good and only has to be sguared off or a minor ridge smoothed but then they are 5 over rings not 20 over.

What 346 said, time to do some precision measureing. EDIT you can use rings that are up to .010" larger than the bore/piston dimention (file fit for correct gap as needed of course) but a 20 over ring will give an oval ring shape (even if filed down for the correct end gap) & wont seal correctly
