For the first time since 1998 I am in the market for an Orange Box.

Last I can recall they were hit or miss. And quality was poor.

Has that changed? If not what Mopar ignition box is safe to run on a daily driver?

Can the Chrome Box be used in daily service?

I have a new circa 1990 Gold Box that has just been wall art. But I know that one wouldn't be an option for driver duty.

I bought an orange box back in 2005 or so and it took a dump after a few weeks...just died and car would never start.

I replaced it with a parts store box and then later a chrome box and so far the chrome box has been just fine. Yes, the chrome box is fine for street.

somewhere I have talked about this, with more less detailed info. The big problem was the power transistor. Just found some newer units got a new transistor number and manufacturer on them.

but... who knows.

yes as mentioned, Chromed ( when they also work LOL ) can be used daily. I did.

(1) not likely any better (2) Chrome or consider a non Mopar option (3) chrome yes (4) even idling in the pits/red flag idling killed my gold box EDIT A person might locate that transistor Nacho spoke of & solder it in (in the orange box)

.....Been racing my Challenger for 8 years with this same set-up.

There's obviously better set-ups from MSD etc., but the Mopar system works.

The Orange box on my RR failed I put on a Wells blue box from O'Reilly Auto Parts to get home, It seems to be just fine and also had more voltage to the coil, AND was about $18

I'm getting great power, crisp response, and a rev limiter out of my Rev-n-ator box. You'll need to adjust your timing a tweak but otherwise drop and insert replacement. It is a little more money than the mopar units at $200, but less than MSD and it looks very close to stock and plugs right into your wiring harness.

The orange box you see behind and to the left of the air cleaner is the MP orange ECU that has been in my family since I bought it in 1999. It was on my boys Dart until 2006 when he went to MSD and went no faster. Been on my 63 since 2006 and it runs 10.70's all day long with it never missing a beat. I mean it has worked flawless since the day I bought it ! But I bought it about 15 years ago and most that have bought and used the orange box since then have complained of alot of problems. If I was buying one now I would go with the Chrome box or do as I plan to down the road and thats just go with MSD as their is so much you can do with any of the newer electronic systems and the multi spark ignitions help keep your plugs cleaner. If I were you with all the complaints and all I would go with the chrome or a newer type ign all together. Ron

I just ditched my Summit brand MSD because of intermittent issues, It'd cut off or act like it was on-off-on-off causing backfires. I called several times they said it was RF interference or something. Well I had enough and went back to the Orange. I've never had any issues and have never seen any difference in power w/ MSD type units. I am however swapping to chrome before the MIR event. This car sees 6400 at the track.

I have run the Chrome box, a FBO box and one purchased at AZ. They all performed the same in my 69 Dart that ran 11 teens @ 118 mph.

I guess the old A688 FBO, right ?

yes, both, Chromed and FBO seemed to me really pretty close although I never raced them ( I'm not into race ), just Chromed shown me a quiker start up.

OF COURSE FOR THE SHORT TIME THEY ( BOTH ) WORKED!!!

My gold box lasted over 2 decades, replaced it with a back up chrome box purchased in the 90's
