We were so exhausted Saturday night that it was agreed to just get some sleep, and take pictures/get loaded up to leave Sunday morning.
John and Opal came over to Dale's to join us for breakfast then we took a bunch of group and individual pictures with all the hardware we had collected. With that done, we started loading up to prepare for the long trip back to Arizona.
"Dave, where did you put the trophy from Rockett racing fuel?"
I turned to see Mom standing behind me, "It's in the Valiant, already packed up...why?"
"I wanted to get some pictures too..."
"Mom! We were out here for thirty minutes, we took pictures of all the cars and all the people with about three different cameras, we can send you all the copies you could possibly want!"
"Well, I just wanted to get some..."
"Ok, fine, where is your camera?"
"Its broken, it's not working right now..."
"Then how were you going to take more pictures?"
"I was in the kitchen, cleaning up after breakfast, I didn't realize you guys were taking them", her pitch was rising, and I suddenly realized she was getting upset, "oh just never mind!" She turned to walk away, shoulders slumped.
I looked over at John and Opal, who were loading their stuff, and both were looking at me like I was the most evil person on earth!
"I totally blew that, didn't I?"
"Yes", Opal answered, with her hand on her neck, "Yes, you did!"
"She didn't want to take pictures, she wanted to be IN them!"
"Exactly!" John shook his head, "and you completely missed it!"
"Dang it!, I hate when I'm an idiot!"

It only took a few minutes to fix my blunder, and of course, she wanted the pictures in front of Darren's Dakota! I knew he was Dad's favorite, but Mom Too?

Every year, I like to spell out where all the Mopars finished up. With this being the tenth running, many people were also looking back at the history of the event and the cars as well. Boone has taken on the mantle of sorts as a record keeper of the event and compiled all the records, making all types of interesting lists out of them, and finding some weird trends hidden inside.

2014 Mopar Finishers:

The number one quickest five day average was once again Eddie Miller and his purple 73 Duster. He has now amassed 1 overall win, 1 Pro Street Power Adder class win, 2 Pro Street NA class wins, and only one DNF in his five attempts.

An interesting fact is, that despite his four wins, his average has slowed down on every subsequent visit to the event!

2006 Pro Street, and Overall Champ. 8.508-159.27 Average
2008 Pro Street PA Champ 8.673-149.80 Average
2010 Broke-DNF
2013 Pro Street NA Champ 8.688-155.97
2014 Pro Street NA Champ 9.305-144.99

This year's runs 8.81-153.67, 9.04-151.73, 9.62-138.65, 9.66-138.98, 9.37-141.95

#3 Paul Cornman green 71 Dodge Demon
Day 1: 9.97-134.71
Day 2: 10.03-133.82
Day 3: 10.11-133.15
Day 4: 10.05-134.46
Day 5: 9.96-135.85
Final Average: 10.029-134.39

Third quickest Mopar average, for 2014 and winner of the Street Race Small Block NA class. Surprisingly, other than Eddie's Duster (four years), and Dale's run this year, this also makes Paul's Demon the third quickest average for a Mopar in all 10 events held! Amazing for an NA small block!

That is such an awesome car, glad to see him take his class win. I eventually want to be able to swim in the small block NA class.

To explain how a tight rivalry can up the stakes at Drag Week, I have to go back to DW13. Randy ran his AAR appearing, but big block powered 70 Barracuda in the shark tank that is Super Street Power Adder in Drag Week 2012, and finished a distant 6th, two seconds back from the hitters!

So, in 2013, he abandoned the N20, and ran in Street Race Big Block Normally Aspirated.
After the smoke cleared on the first day, his 10.77-124.64 left him in third place, two tenths behind a black 65 GTO, and 15 hundredths up on a 70 Buick's 10.93-119.93.
The next day in Indy, the GTO stretched him by three tenths, but his 10.868-123.21 was only a thou up on the Buick's 10.869-120.62.
Wednesday, at St. Louis, The Barracuda's 10.884-123.97, gave up time to the Buick's 10.878-121.08. Ok, he had Randy's attention, so he walked around the blue 70, noticing the GS and Stage-1 badges prominently displayed.

The Hemi vs Stage1 magazine wars of yesteryear did much to move the Buick up the list of preferred targets for any Mopar guy, and Randy was no different.

Thursday, at Memphis his 10.866-124.6 stemmed the tide, as the Buick went 10.884-120.37. Back at Bowling Green, Randy closed it out with his best run of DW13, a 10.720-124.25 to the Buick's 10.778-120.97. So, Randy accepted his third place plaque, with a 10.81-124 average over the Buick's 10.86-120, and probably never gave it another thought.

For Drag Week 2014, Randy had a whole new plan, and not only decided to move his Barracuda into the Super Street Big Block NA category, he brought his wife Connie to run her 69 Camaro in the Super Street Small Block NA class!

The first day in Tulsa, the Barracuda recorded a 10.663-125.45, and Randy immediately noticed that Mark Covey, and the blue Buick GS 455 Stage-1, was on his heels, and in the same class as well, with a 10.719-123.28.

Tuesday at Topeka, Randy was only a thou quicker.
Wednesday at Thunder Valley, Mark was a thou quicker.

This is a battle for 2nd and 3rd in class, but really, it's a two year, 10 day slugfest between a pair of proud muscle cars, and proud muscle car owners!

By the time we rolled into Great Bend, Covey was willing to try any thing he could to close the gap on the Mopar, so he put his head together with other guys, and they used every devious, underhanded, GM speed secret they could think of. When that didn't work, they grabbed a hack saw, and cut the exhaust out from under the GS!

The Buick used a 10.595-124.91 at Great Bend to pull back two of the precious 5 hundredths they had given away on day one. Randy's 10.615-126.55, while a best of the week, left him with a razor thin margin going into the finale in Tulsa.

The sensational Saturday morning air at Tulsa gave Randy and the Barracuda a stout 10.52-126.9, that he felt pretty confident in. Meanwhile Mark and his buddies were busy fashioning an air pan out of a trash can lid and sealing the carb to the hood scoop. The big Stage 1 responded with a huge 10.364-126.99!

Randy pulled back into the staging lanes with a bit of desperation, how was he going to magically muster up nearly two tenths? He struck up a conversation with Dale Gebhart as they waited, and the Q and A session turned to launching technique.
"I've got a fairly tight converter so I stall it up pretty hard before I leave", Randy explained.
"Doesn't this thing have a big arm in it?" Dale asked.
"Yeah, sure does."
"If it will launch clean, I'd leave at idle, and let that stroker get a run at the converter", Dale advised.

As thrilled as Randy was with the result, a 10.39-127.86, a quick look at his calculator confirmed he needed a little more.

In another conference with Dale, they decided to pull out some timing. The back of the lanes were closed, so he would only get one more shot at it, and the E body gave him the goods with a 10.369-128.37. The final average was Purple Barracuda 10.621-125.6 to Blue GS 10.628-124.0!
