Define what you mean by "best" carb?
The Carter/Edelbrock carbs are better for fuel economy.
The Holley based carbs are great for power and ease of tuning.
Regarding the axle ratio, That is another non specific, wide open question that is hard to answer. You mentioned a "purple" cam. Mopar Performance makes a wide range of different cams. The smallest version will not like the same gears as the largest purple cam.
The 3.23 is a great ratio for stock or slightly bigger than stock camshafts.

By best carb I mean good performance with minimal tune problems, the cam is 484lift/284 duration, 2200 stall converter, posi rear end, edelbrock heads, eddy performer RPM intake

For what purpose... Street or Racing??

Biggest problem I ever saw back in the day was reading too many Hot Rod magazines and OVER carbing a daily driven street machine..

Good reviews for the Street Demon. Mancini Racing has them.

The Street Demon is the carb of choice today for a street car.

How much hiway cruising are you planning? 3.91s or 3.55s are more fun stop light to stop light, but the 3.23s are more comfortable at hiway speeds.

3.55 gear ratio would be all around, the 484 cam matches to 3.91

I have a Carter AVS that fits the 71 440HP with auto if you are interested. Also have a 71 Carter AVS for the 383/Auto.

Indeed it do...

Got a 750 AFB on top of a 440 with a 'purple', and 3:91's that works real well...

I would go with the 3.55's and a Thunder series AVS or a 3310 style Holley carb. Both have worked well for builds I have done.

I would maybe consider a carb with 4 corner idle because of the cam you are using. Quickfuel makes one that is easily tunable.

Very happy with my 770 Holley Ultra Street Avenger. Very pleasent street manners compared to my old 750 DP. Butt dyno doesn't feel like it lost any power during the swap.

A 750 Vac secondary Holley will do just fine. The 3.23 gears are fine if you are just running around town making some black marks and wanting to drive the car on the highway without making to many rpms.

I for one would not buy from Mancini as you can get almost everything they sell from someone else who will not kill you on shipping. But that is another story for another time. The Eddy carbs I have had over the years have all been junk...

Thats what I have/had on my 440 with 3.55's.

Recently took off my Pro-Form HP bodied 750 vac sec Holley in favor of a 800 cfm Thunder Series AVS & couldnt be happier. Better throttle response, cleaner idle & higher gas mileage on highway

Don't get an Edelbrock, but if you have to have one I'll gladly sell you my 800. I tried a 750 Edelbrock and then an 800. They just don't like a 440 with a little extra cam. They are great carbs on other engines but not a 440 with low vacuum. I could not tune the off idle dead spot out of either one. I bought a Street Demon and love it.

Holley 750 3310 vacuum secondary.

They work great on mild 440's and can get 14-15 mpg with your combo.

There are several recommendations here for the Holley 3310. The 3310 used to be my go-to carb for 440s. It is a good carb, but it is old calibration and design that requires several adjustments to work best on our engines.

I just have 2 questions for those that recommend the 3310 over the new Street Demon;
1st) Have you had a wide band O2 on your 3310?
2nd) Have you tried a Street Demon on your car?

Every 3310 that I have had on 440 has been too rich on the cruise. They need the mains stepped down several sizes for a good cruise mix. And then the PVCRs need to be opened up to get the WOT mix back where it needs to be and the power valve opening point needs to change.

On most, the secondaries open way late and so need a spring kit to dial in the best opening point.

And if a choke matters, the Street Demon had the electric choke standard.

If the OP is buying a new carb, he would be much better served with the Street Demon. More features, better calibration.

BUT, if the OP is on a budget and can tune, the 3310 is often a bargain at swap meets. They have been around for decades and the swaps are full of them. A little shopping can usually get a decent one for $75-$100. It will need cleaning, a kit, some jets, and a spring kit, but will do a good job.

By the time you get done freshening up the old 3310, you will have $150 or more in it plus your time.

For $200 +/- more the Street Demon drives better, won't need the parts or time, and has a choke.
