On a 72 with a 340 4 speed what should the timing be set at?? I said at one place it should be TDC and another place in the manual it said 2 1/2 BTDC. So what is it?

Too many variables to give an accurate answer...minimum should be 0 TDC and "dial" in as much BTDC timing as your engine can handle without running too hot, starter kickback, detonation, etc, etc...I run my 70 340 6pack 4spd at 10 degrees BTDC with 28 degrees advance on the Mallory dist for a total of 38 degrees in before 2500 RPM

Unless you need it at the factory retarded specs to pass an emissions test I would set the initial at 15 & weld & file the slots to get 35 total (checked with vac adv capped). Best would be to set the initial with the vac gauge method then shorten the slots to get 35 total (initial from the VG method+slot amount to get 35 total) then work with the springs then plug in the can & adj when it comes in with a 3/32" allen wrench. Bottom line you want NO pinging under any circumstances and ANY you can hear is way too much and you dont want so much initial that the starter is cranky
