If you were to just smooth out the edge your piston would be way out of balance... you can find a piston to replace that.. you might need to have it balanced to match

You should be able to buy one of those. Don't worry about the weight if it is a few grams off. Your will never know it.

Yeah I have seen some BAD engines over the years that still ran.. but they ran like sh1t and shook pretty bad but yes it was still running
