Any experiences with converting a dual point prestolite distributor with a petronix electronic system.
I'm not even sure you can get a system that will convert a dual point distributor.

Has anyone done this??

Thanks

2 kits available...the basic Ignitor pn#1382 and the Ignitor II PN#91382

Be sure to use the appropriate Flame Thrower coil, eliminate the ballast resistor, no solid core wires, brass terminal dist cap, I'd recommend the epoxy filled coil over the oil filled, I'd also recommend the basic Ignitor kit PN#1382 if you want a hassle free install, the Ignitor II may require some mods to the plate install in the Prestolite dual point conversion if you want to upgrade

Mike, not sure which ones I have used but all that I have done had to have one of the mounting holes elongated about .010 to match the plate.

Thanks Mike, exactly what I wanted to know. I didn't see my distributor number in Petronix's tech manual so it got me wondering whether I can even do it. I'm not 100% yet whether to do it, this car is a six pack car , I've done it up stock, so I would like to keep it looking stock.
What does this do to the original engine wiring harness when you eliminate the ballast.

Ignitor III is available too!

I wish they had the ignitor 3 for the Prestolite, I didn't relize they had the 2 available for the prestolite , I have the 1382 , haven't used it yet.

I might buy an ignitor 3 and see what it takes to make it work in the prestolite housing , might be as easy as swapping in the breaker plate from a chrysler distributor or finding another single point prestolie and using it ... make it work in a prestolite I have an nos tach drive single point prestolite distributor for RB application.

Nothing if you do it right , get another ballast resistor and take out the resistor and replace it with a piece of heavy gauge wire , #10 should do it .

The only thing I don't like about the pertronics now is they switched production to China , at least the last time I bought their coils they were made in China , I sent it back . I have a coil I bought in 99 or 2000 and it was USA made , I ended up buying the Epoxy filled MSD blaster coil instead , but those might be China sourced now too ???

Everything fits under the stock cap, you'll only have an additional wire exiting the distributor, eliminate the ballast resistor from it's function, to do this gut out the resistor coil from inside the porcelain base, solder in an insulated 10 gauge wire to replace the resistor coil, and just plug in the stock wires to each blade connector as original to close the circuit, just make sure there's nothing exposed on the backside of your modified ballast resistor that can contact the firewall and cause a short, you'll now have a true 12 volt system which should/will result in better start ups, hotter spark, better overall ignition service, and you can retain a stock appearance, but rid yourself of a weak link, the ballast resistor, and should you decide to return back to dual points, everything is reversible, with the exception of needing a new ballast resistor

Thank you guys for the information. That really helps.

Now for the coil, I guess I could get the black one and get that transfer from ECS and it will maintain the stock look.

The other is my reproduction plug wires, can I keep those?

I like this thread. I installed an MSD6A in my Daytona for the Hemi. But thinking of converting one of my Prestolite dual-points I have to a Pertronix for the trigger ( I have a regular Chrysler Electronic distributor now for the trigger ). My MSD installation also has the wiring diagram for Pertronix distributors as well, pretty straight forward. Luckily, I have another curve kit I can put in the Prestolite dual-point...

Thanks, based on this I think I'll do the switch this winter. I didn't want to ruin the stock look after I went through the trouble to make it look stock.
