Looking through an old stash of parts I came across this older ECU...just wondering if I can keep it as a spare for my challenger (which currently has the infamous Orange box).
Looks to be from the 80's or 90's,
Does anyone know if these are good quality?
Thanks

I'm assuming you have a dual terminal (single) ballast. Look in the archives & find out which pin is for the red/green wire on the pentastar connector & ohm that pin to the ECU case & if it has infinity then yes it will work IF it is good. If it has some ohms on the meter then it requires a 4 terminal "dual" ballast system

I'm sure it'll work for you, plug it in and see. If it runs stick it the glove compartment as a spare.

I have about 8 of them from cars I parted over the years. A few years ago I was testing old one's I had laying around by plugging them into my car and seeing if the car would run. They were all good, I left a factory black one like that on my car and drove it for while and it(the factory one) runs just as good or maybe a little better than a chrome "race" box that I had in there. It's still on the car today and I have driven it all over the country since.

Test yours and see if it's any good.

I have one where the stuff melted out of the back, it is still good.

Those older boxes are the only way to go the newer ones after 1995 were for the most part sub par

It's an ignition box, it's not an engine control unit (ECU). That implies a computer of some sort.

It's an original unit, stored in the box of its replacement. Chances of it being good are slim, most never got replaced unless they failed.

I don't understand the romance of the Mopar ignition box. Sure, back in the day it was better than points. Sure, it was adequate for nearly all street use.
But the original HEI chip was better, when it came out.
And, with working CD units, most of them multispark, going for $35 - $100 on the 'bay, why bust your hump trying to get a stock-type ignition box to work?

Or just bite the bullet and buy either Rev-n-nator or FBO's new box that is pretty cool as well, and not just a GM HEI wrapped in a Mopar-type box.

R.

Just did this test, looks like i get a bit of resistance between red/green wire pin and the case...so dosnt seem to be a match for my 2 terminal ballast system....

Correct. A person could plug it in and run power from the ign2 brown wire circuit thru the 5 ohm side of a spare "dual" ballast over to the red/green wire pin & see if it works but highly likely as said it is bad since it appears to be an OE ignition "box" in an aftermarket container but if your current box ever crapped out it'd sure beat hitchhiking
