I'm assuming the black out area ain't the fins as a rad repair man I knew used a special black paint on the fins which did not inhibit heat transfer like a regular paint does

He's asking about the rad support blackout...not the rad itself.
SEM paint works great and the gloss is right.

SEM Trim Black.

Everyone should keep a can of this around. It matches many items on autos and trucks. Like door handles, air dams, grills, steel cozy window frames, radiator blackouts, tail panels and lot's more.

The radiator support black out isn't flat black. Flat black is too dull. It does have a slight sheen to it orginally. The SEM paint that has been reccomended is very close and holds up very well.
Now all you have to do is decide if you are going to paint it like the factory did or like everyone thinks the way the factory did.

New restoration that most people think is correct.

The SEM works well. I used the Duplicolor Low Gloss black on both of mine. I think the # is 1451. Then again nothing I have is remotely original.

Did you scuff up the paint to help it stick better?

For a color comparison, I did my core support with Eastwood underhood black.
