Help!? The dipstick tube in my 273 broke off flush with the block.
This is in my 65 Belvedere driver,it appears it was cracked for a long time, but the other day I had to take off the timing cover to fix a water leak, and I noticed the tube was kinda wobbling aroundand....
Well I tugged on it a little and it came off in my hand. The part where it bulges out split all the way around.I have pretty much tugged all the remnants of the bulge off now trying to get a grip, but no dice.Any ideas short of pulling the motor and oil pan?I am planning a 383/4-speed swap, but that's a while and a couple thousand dollars down the road, but this may hasten the change over.

It's a light press fit, if you can lightly thread a tap into it and pull on the tap with vice grips. Use grease in the flutes of the tap so as to not put metal shavings in the oil.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

No need to go that route if the above don't work, just remove the oil pan.

ADEMON,Great advise!!It worked and came out without dropping any chunks or anything into the pan.I thought about that ,but could not find my easyouts,so your suggestion got me on the hunt and I found em ....and it was out in seconds. Once it started spinning ,I pulled it up with just the crescent wrench. Thanks a bunch!

Save your old broken tube because some replacement tubes are different lengths. That way you can measure the old one and cut the new one off if the size is not the right one. I went through this with my 360 when I had to replace it. You can then reuse your old dipstick.

If it's a driver and the labour involving dropping the pan is outweighed by risk.

If pulling offending tube is unsuccessful. Consider knocking the offending tube into the oil pan with a drift.

The chance of the offending tube causing any problems is pretty thin. You may even try using a boroscope and magnet to fish it out.

You'll never get it back out the dipstick hole on the block if you push it into the pan !!

No but a flexible magnet may fish it out through the oil drain plug hole. But it's still best to thread something into it and pull it out of the block.
