On my Rampage with a 518 trans it has a flare when shifting from 2nd to 3rd... what is the normal cause for a flare on the 2-3 shift... I'm gonna be pulling the pan in a day or so, so I'll check the bands and I want to check the valve body for any sticky valves thanks

not familiar with the 518 but if they are like a 727/904 then the intermediate band is out of adjustment,(the one on the outside of the case) I run mine in with my fingers as tight as I can and back out 1.5 turns, that is with a 4.2 ratio arm,,if it pulls the motor down at shift then it is too tight and I usually back the adjuster 1/4 turn at a time untill it go's away. this is with my 904

Yup you're on the right track Mike. Basically the 2nd gear turns off faster then the 3rd gear drum can apply.
The only other thing it could be is if the high gear clutch is taking a Sh!t, but you'll see a lot of clutch material in the pan.
I can't remember, what clutches did we put in that thing? Alto's or Raybesto's tans?
I dont recall either but I think they were Raybestos.. I'm gonna pull the pan to put a drain and temp boss on it so I'll see what kind of trash is in the pan

Let me know what you find. If it looks like there is a bunch of junk in it, we can go through the trans.
I have another one to do this week anyway, so just bring it over and I'll take care of ya...
Thanks Scott.. I have to look at the down shift.. this thing doesnt like to unless I pull it down or if I give the throttle a few blips while sitting still.. I'll see whats in the pan first

When I went from the 340 to the 416 I had the same thing happen to my 904 on the first pass. I thought I missed the shift! It was a pretty low end setup that I had bought with the low end fish. Adding fluid helped some making it mostly go away. Taking the tranny to PTC hopefully has it fully fixed.
This sounds like you found the limit of that particular build of the trans.
Raff's flare is more than likely the front band releasing faster than the front clutch is applying. A number of things could be causing it, fluid path leak , too many springs in the front clutch and/or too many springs in the front servo.

I have also seen cases with a restrictor in the high drum feed used in some shift kits that can cause this problem depending on what has been done to the unit now.
When Scott and I went through this it was basically a stock rebuild with a Trans-go shift improver kit so I think it has the stock number of springs but I also went with the 727 input shaft and pump so I could run one of my high stall conv in it

Mike, I have always run 15 springs in my 727's w/o flare. Personally unless there is something in the valve body giving an issue I don't believe you can have to many. Doug
Well being this was a junkyard trans that Scott and I went through I think it has a valve body issue and/or a governor issue.. being it doesnt like to down shift so in a day or so when I get the wife home from the hospital I'm gonna drop the pan and the valve body.. I want to see if the valves are hanging up or are free

Last one I built had 12 or 15 with about .080 clearance , a billet front servo from Randy J with both springs and I can't remember if it was a 3.8 or 4.2 lever set at 2.5 turns out and a Cope full auto valve body. It flared on the 2-3, removed one of the springs in the servo and dropped down to 9 springs , flare up gone , but with both done at the same time I not sure which one was the fix... it was fixed by someone else because of schedule conflicts and that is what the guy did that fixed it.

I have the stock 3.8 arm in it now.. I'll drop the pan first and check out the VB and readjust the bands then go from there... IF need be I'll pull the trans
