Only a few hundred more and you can buy a brand new one from Dr. Diff so the price is high IMO, especially for a used one with an unknown history. As far as on the street? I wouldn't run one for two reasons. First off the noise, they are REALLY loud when the ratchet (Loud "Clack Clack Clack" sounds just like a roller coaster when it's climbing a steep hill). Secondly, on the street you don't need one, a good Mopar SG unit on street tires will rarely fail even behind a Hemi. They also hold up fine at the track on slicks unless you are running a heavy car or a bunch of HP (in which case something else in the rear will likely break before the SG unit fails). ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Twocents.gif)

I wheeled my 78 CJ-7 with Dana 44s/Detroits front/rear. Never had the front hubs locked, of course, but I wheeled it hard (WOT hillclimbs, rock crawling, you name it), and it never failed me. As stated, they are LOUD on the street, and if you go around a turn to quickly, you'll feel the locker in your lower back/seat of your pants. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh2.gif)

I had one in my big block Dodge Truck front and rear with 4.88's (notice the auxiliary fuel tank in the bed- 99 gallons). It would go nearly anywhere, but every once in a while is sounded like superman hit the rear axle flange with a 20 lbs sledgehammer when you were making a mild left or right turn. The whole truck would shutter.
It would not turn on rock or hard pack either. It just wanted to go straight. An air locker in the front would have been the hot ticket.
I didn't catch if this was a 8 3/4 or a Dana, but there are some nice options out there both new and used. Dr Diff makes a really sweet unit.
I just picked up a brand new 489 case with Truetrac and 3.91's for my '68 a-body. I'm still breaking it in. It runs absolutely silent. Staying out of it for 500 miles is the hard part.
You will definitely want overdrive in your car with anything below 3.23's and even then.....

I ended up selling it to some guy in Colorado 10 something years ago. It was a rust free truck built from a Camper Special w/ 2 wheel drive.

I have been running one in my 63 for about 5 years. It works great for me. It has never chattered at all and is not that noisey. Only every so often do I even know I have a Detroit Locker as sometimes I can feel a little thud when it locks back up. But its not bad at all. It just unlocks a wheel when you turn and once striaght it locks back up so if your on gas hard enough when you make a turn thats when I can feel it lock back up at times. I have also raced my car a few times over the years with it and it does lock mechanically so it wont have no clutch slippage or cluth chatter. Ron
