working on getting car back on road and have a few issues. motor is same but i installed a crt 727 transmission now my drive shaft yoke doesnt slide into tranny far enough to let me slide rear ujoint into rear end. with old tranny also 727 i could slide yoke into tranny far enough to then lift drive shaft up and slide back into rear. are there diff length trannys ? how much play should there be ? thanks for any help

I like 3/4-7/8". I'd think the non truck "regular" 727's have the same extension housing length. I'm assuming you are referring to output shaft spline engagement inside that ain't letting your yoke slide in as far as it did on the other 727

& that end clearance is required. You have some drivetrain fore/aft location leeway with the slotted trans mount in the rear and the mtr mts possibly in the front. Not sure if the splines were not cut far enough on the output shaft. I'm assuming both trans' have the "flat" aftermarket type output shaft seal. A stackup of tolerances to some extent is normal but you've lost all your clearance. Not sure what happened but just tossin out ideas that hit me. I would call Tom at Cope & see what he says and Kunkel too (on here) if he sees this. an option which I did once is you can space the front hangars back a bit keeping in mind: tire/wheelwell clearance/rear shackle angle/housing to tank clearance/shocks get harder to fit on lower shockplate stud. First lets figure out what part/adjustment is wrong. Holler back with any news

If the yoke slid into one 727 but won't slide into another the problem is most likely in the trans; could be a tight bushing or an obstruction in the tailhousing. Remnants of a shipping cover?

Also, look into the slip yoke to see if something is blocking full engagement.

Did you call Cope??? Why would anyone not call the guy he bought the tranny from? John is a good guy and will help you if you call him,

crawled under car last night and looked again, drive shaft is definately sliding into tranny all the way. only thing i can figure is mabey when i changed motor mounts( i went from solid to poly locks) it set the drive line back some. weve got a place here in town that will shorten the drive shaft probably a good time to have it balanced anyways.
