I just swapped a radiator in to my Duster. I have a 440/727 with a 26" radiator (from a '70 Fury). I am going to fill it up and start looking for any big leaks. I am hoping to start it up for the first time here in a couple of weeks. Does anyone know what the cooling capacity for a '70 Fury would be? Or about how much Antifreeze I should have on hand. I was going to pick up concentrated antifreeze (not the pre-diluted) and run a mixture of distilled water and antifreeze. Any advice?

2 gallons of the regular green stuff will cover you to -35F (50-50 mix) & give plenty of corrosion protection. no dexcool. is this going to be a new rebuild breakin or just a new radiator?

Its all new, the guy I bought it from broke a rod in the original 318. Took a big chunk out of the cylinder wall and the crank. I rebuilt the 440 and the 727 a while back, I just got them in the car and measured for the radiator. I still have a bunch of stuff to finish before I can start it up and break it in.

Unless its freezing out, like it is here.
I would put pure water in it for break in,
that way if there are any leaks or other
problems you won't have antifreeze everywhere.
After everything checks out, you can drain it. Then fill with
your antifreeze.

That's an excellent excuse to throw a BB in there!. Be sure & have the stat out for breakin & I'd drill a 1/16" or so hole in it while you have it out & handy. Several helpers to set timing, add trans fluid, check for leaks underneath, check leaks on top, you in the drivers seat watching the gauges & shouting orders plenty of ZDDP oil & read "breakin secrets" at www.mototuneusa.com

Chances are small but the cost is big. If coolant gets into the oil. It's all over for the bearings.

Almost ashamed to admit but I follow Demon440's advice (but only on old stuff).

Sounds like you know him . I pump up the cooling system ahead of time with no coolant to 15 lbs with my stant radiator pumper upper. I bought it at a sale & it's turned out to be a pretty handy tool. I too hate the sight of antifreeze leaking.

After break in make sure you use distilled water in your mixture. No calcium build up down the road. Filled mine yrs ago & the coolant is like new & no junk floating around inside the rad.
