I am planning on painting some stripes on the hood of one of my cars, and need advice on the best way to do it. I am using DBC basecoat and 2021 clear. Would it be best to base/clear the car, then after a day or two, tape off my stripes and use DBC (for the stripe) again, then reclear the whole hood? Then color sand the whole car? OR, would I just use DCC singe stage for the stripe and not reclear? Any advice would be greatly appreciated (ie, how long do I need to wait before I can tape the stripes, what grit would I use to sand the clear down again before the stripe, or do I even need to do that?) THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

It sort of depends on the color of the stripe, you can base/clear a solid color, but why bother? I would cover the whole car with plastic, tape where the stripes go, then scuff and shoot, but that's me. As long as all traces of wax/dirt etc. are gone, scuffing should be sufficient. Today's paints stick to practically anything. But if it is a metallic color stripe then yes, you need to prepare the whole hood for clear with 600 grit, tape/shoot the stripes, and then clear everything.

It would be best to scuff the hood, paint the stripes and then clear the whole hood. Otherwise you will have "edges" to your stripes.

I agree, but when original the stripes were suppose to have "edges." Depends on what he wants, but either way is correct, and one is a lot less work/risk.

You are still going to have "Edges" where the tape has been pulled off, even after you clear it, because you can't sand them. Maybe not as pronounced, big deal. What if he screws up the clear on the hood, or if it doesn't match the fenders? More clear will darken the hood some, maybe not enough to be noticable, but I have seen it happen before. Then you have to blend the top of the fenders to match. All this for stripes..........seems like a lot of work to avoid "edges".........you guys in here love a lot of extra work for nothing..........but what do I know???!!!
