when I let off the key nwhen it starts it wont return.The starter keeps grinding.It feels like the keys switch is binding.What do I check?How do I get the ignition switch out?

Does it have a tilt column? Tilt & standard are different critters and require different processes to replace the Ignition switch.

If its a tilt, make sure the activation rod is not dragging on the column at the bottom of the dash. The switch is on the column, under the dash, and a rod goes up through the column to the lock assembly. Gene

You pull the stearing wheel off,

there is a clip inside,

that holds the ignition in,

and a pig tail of wires that unplug.

I think there is a spring that makes the key return..

The spring is in the switch itself, not the cylinder-lock assem. I wonder if the cylinder is binding and can be helped with some spray stuff. Never seen the switch spring back action fail.

I syrayed wd 40 in it and it didnt help.

Looks like a one page deal. This is the part you will be interested in.

After you disassemble the column to this point, you will then press in on the "A" button, and the ignition switch will slide out.

Then you can remove the switch itself.

If you happen to have a tilt column, there may be a rod that runs to a remote ignition switch located farther down the column. Its been a long time since I have opened up a 70's tilt column so my memory is a bit hazy.
