I have a 77 Aspen and I've had people telling me I need to have more travel in the suspension of my car. Minimal 5" of travel is what I've been told. The front end on these cars aren't the best by any means and when I checked mine I measured 2" of lift. Pretty tight. Should I loosen the torsion bars to free up the front end?

Thanks

Is the car sitting up high now... 2" sounds very low
on travel

I have a 30" slick in the rear and a 26" front tire so the car sits level but that would be because of the torsions being turned up. I don't know how much I can gain lowering the torsions? I really don't like that front end down and the rear high. Guess I could go with a taller front tire as well?

You have to lower it to get the travel... you can lower
the rear also... when I worked on the design of that
front end I put zert fittings in the front bar hangers
to allow easy movement.. I drilled holes in the rubber
before I installed the bars for the grease

It would be nice to get some bars with the diameters that run parallel to the front of the car turned down a little. Just like the 6cyl or drag bar for the A body. Somebody must do this with transverse bars. Maybe feel Firm?
I would not even be afraid to polish down thows diameters with a flap type wheel on a disk grinder. Guys turn down A body type T bars all the time.

Its pretty simple on straight bars.. I made up MULTIPLE
diameter bars when I was in the design team on that
front end... but I did the diameter changes before
I bent them... I did about 30 different designed bars
before it ever went into production... mainly for ride
rate but also trying to loose weight on the front
being that system is heavier then what was in production
but we were trying to get room for catalytic converters
EDEIT
the ride rate on those bars is ALL in the front before
it it makes the first bend... I also milled the sides
of the bars in the angled section to loose weight
but still keep the vertical strength... but that
didnt fly due to the work needed for production

Yes Mike. I'm talking about the diameters before the bend. How much reduction do you think it would take to give these bars some decent stored energy?
Interesting about making room for the converters.

Depending on what his car weighs but .030 will be in
the ball park... .050 would be about all I would go..
but I also forget the diameter they went with for production

Cool Mike. Brad will read this in the morning. Once he takes his dose of Geritol. He is fast asleep.

rings a bell

Hahaha I'll see how much travel I can loosen up once I have my trans back and in place. But I do need a taller tire and turn the bars down. I was hoping that someone that runs one of these cars would share some of there ideas. That's basically why these weren't a big hit for racers because of the funky design of torsion bars and front end weight.

Those front ends are pretty big in the hot rods...
not so in the racing game.. just too heavy.. if you
lower it down and put some longer shocks on it it
isnt bad... but you need to lower the back end also
so it can transfer the weight easier
