Trans was working good before...removed the front pump to drill case and relocate vent from stock location. Drilled and tapped the case and installed a fitting for the vent. Removed the stock plastic vent and installed a pipe plug.

I did not snug the front band adjustment before removing pump to hold anything. On reassembly the pump needed to be tapped and bolts snugged more and tapped to get the pump in. After doing this the shaft does not have any endplay and does not want to turn by hand either. Heard a possible pop sound while torquing the bolts..may have been the pump seating itself?

I am guessing something came out of alignment while the pump was out and the transmission was horizontal? Trans was sitting horizontal with pump removed for a few days. Trans was also drained for several weeks before the pump was removed and installed again.

Any idea what is going on in the trans and how to fix or investigate further?

you are going to have to remove the pump again...sounds like the clutch packs moved and are not fully engaged with each other..

set the trans on its tail shaft...let gravity help you..

I did stand the transmission vertical on the extension housing(4x4 trans) for re-installing the pump.

I pulled it out and tried to install with same results of the shaft having no endplay and not wanting to turn.

How would someone realign the clutches? Do I need to completely tear down the trans or is there something I can do with the pump out?

I had a similar issue. The rear pack had slipped forward and didn't want to slide home again until I pulled the front assembly out.

Be careful of the 2 thrust washers between the input shaft and output shaft. Probably a good chance you bent a clutch or two.
