I myself would drop the rear drive shaft out. 2x or 4x4 towing on a 2wheel dolly. on a 2x towing for sure will kill a trans in N while towing short or long distance at speed with the shaft spinning.
you can leave trans in park and shift t-case to N... on a full time rig. it will let the rear driveshaft/axle turn while the front does not. it will be spining the t-case differental/spiders and rear output shaft.
if it is part time, same thing shift t-case to N and let the rear shaft/axle only turn.
short distance/low speed should not be a problem.
but IMHO...5mins droping a shaft is way cheaper than a trans rebuild..why risk it?
plus it is less drag just pulling the weight and only turning the rear axle on truck being towed.

what they said plus check the width of the dolly. most are made for fwd grinders but they do come in wider sizes. some skinny rollers might help.

you say its a w 150. thats a 4 wheel drive truck. Put the Transfer case in neutral and tow away. But as said it only takes a few minuits to remove the rear drive shaft..
if its a D 150 you must remove the drive shaft period.
I am truckless..

I appreciate all of the comments and "as a safety precausions" but that really does not answer the question. Maybe I should rephrase it.
With the rear wheels on the ground and driveshaft turning the trans in neutral, does it turn anything that needs lubrication in the trans?
I really don't want to have to disconnect the driveshaft unless I absolutely have to. I will be towing the truck for 5 1/2 hours one way.
with t-case in N the rear output shaft/t-case differental spider gears/chain and both chain cogs will be turning..they have splash oiling when turning. so you can tow it in N and the parts turning will be lubed.
on a 2x trans the drive shaft will be turning the drums and may slip clutches/bands causing wear to the parts..
IMHO..I would undo the axle end of shaft and tie it up to the frame or slip the back 1/2 of shaft from yoke leaviing yoke on t-case output yoke.
5 1/2 hrs rolling in N will be oiling moving parts but why have the un-needed drag on tow vehical?
plus the speedo works off the t-case and it will add the tow miles to odometer.
